They Will Kill You is the type of film that proudly wears its influences on its sleeve. As our writer Jacob Harper said in his review, the movie is a wild ride that really should be seen on a big screen. It's a bonkers and gory fever dream that stars Zazie Beetz as Asia Reaves, a kickass, sword-wielding heroine who goes toe-to-toe with a group of Satanists, led by Patricia Arquette's Lilith, all to save her sister, Maria Reaves (Myha'la).
If you like They Will Kill You's level of gore and eye-popping visual style, check out these movies, as it's clear they influenced the film.
Rosemary's Baby
The setting of They Will Kill You resembles the high-rise featured in Rosemary's Baby, and both films are set in NYC. In the case of They Will Kill You, the film takes place in a location called "The Virgil," and like Rosemary's Baby, it's populated by Satanists. It's obvious the setting is a nod to the classic Roman Polanski film, and the high-rise locations are important to both movies, fostering a sense of isolation and nefarious intent at the hands of Satanists. Additionally, in both films, the cultists target young women as part of a much grander scheme involving the devil himself.
Rosemary's Baby is available to stream for free on Pluto TV. It's also available on Paramount+.
Evil Dead
They Will Kill You has such an insane level of gore and absurdity that it's hard not to think of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 while watching it. There's a manic, feverish energy that runs through the movie, especially with the level of bloodshed and violence, that resembles Raimi's early horror movies. Additionally, there's a scene where Heather Graham's character dies, due to Asia's shotgun blast, but because the cultists can reanimate, her eyeball creeps and crawls through vents to spy on Asia. It very much feels like an Evil Dead moment.
Evil Dead is available to rent on most major streaming platforms.
Kill Bill
The fight sequences within They Will Kill You warrant seeing the movie on the big screen. They're beautifully choregraphed, and they resemble Quinten Tarantino's Kill Bill movies. Even the blood and violence look poetic and beautiful. Meanwhile, Asia wields a katana just as well as Uma Thurman's unnamed bride character.
Kill Bill is available to rent on most major streaming platforms.
Ready or Not
When the initial trailer dropped for They Will Kill You, it earned comparisons to Ready or Not, especially since the sequel had its theatrical release just a week prior. Both movies deal with the uber wealthy taking advantage of desperate people, tricking them, and trying to kill them. I do think Ready or Not and Ready or Not 2 have a deeper and more meaningful class critique. That said, They Will Kill You and the Ready or Not movies blend comedy with horror near perfectly.
Ready or Not is available to stream on Hulu and Disney+. It's also available to rent on most major platforms. Ready or Not 2 is currently in theaters.
