It's been 20 long years, but Leslie Vernon is set to return. That's right! A sequel is planned for the meta slasher movie, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, and it's going to reunite the director and original cast.
The news broke earlier this week and was then confirmed by Variety. Titled Behind the Mask II: The Return of Leslie Vernon, the sequel will, of course, follow the adventures of serial killer Leslie Vernon. It's also been confirmed that director Scott Glosserman and writer David J. Stieve will join original stars Nathan Baesel, Angela Goethals, and Robert Englund. Because the sequel is in very early development, there's no word yet on the script or what mayhem Vernon may cause this time.
In a statement republished by Variety, Glosserman said, "For 20 years, people have asked if Leslie would ever come back. The truth is, he never really left." Glosserman continued, “Fans kept this movie alive by sharing it, quoting it, introducing it to their friends, and treating it like something worth holding onto. This sequel is happening because of them.”
Additionally, a Kickstarter will launch to help support the sequel, though Glosserman said the film will get made without fan support, but that more funds can help expand the scope of the movie. In his statement, he said, "We're making the movie either way...but the more the audience gets involved, the bigger we can make it. Bigger set pieces. More cameos. More surprises. This has always been a fan-driven film, and it still is."
Further, Paper Street Pictures, which is led by Aaron B. Koontz and Cameron Burns, will produce the sequel. This company has a solid track record and has produced Scare Package and Scare Package II, The Pale Door, Sorry About the Demon, The Artifice Girl, just to name a few. Adam F. Goldberg (The Goldbergs, Shelby Oaks) is joining as an executive producer.
Lately, there's been a return of popular meta horror movies and horror comedies. For instance, Scary Movie 6 will release on June 5. Meanwhile, Scream 7 has become the highest-grossing entry in the franchise. It certainly seems like the perfect time for Leslie Vernon's long-overdue return, especially in the age of social media, influencer culture, and a resurgence of slasher movies. We'll see what tricks he gets up to this time. Maybe he'll livestream his murders. Who knows!
In the meantime, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is available to stream on AMC+ and Prime Video. It's available to rent on other streaming platforms.
