Horror-comedy Widow's Bay dominates early rounds of 78th Emmy Awards with 8 wins

The horror-comedy Widow's Bay, streaming on Apple TV, just scored eight Emmy Awards ahead of the primetime telecast ceremony on September 14.

What is Widow's Bay about, and which Emmy Award winners have yet to be announced?

In total, Widow's Bay has been nominated for 19 Emmy Awards, and while some of the winners were announced during a two-night ceremony at the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE in downtown Los Angeles over the weekend, the rest of the winners will be announced during the primetime telecast ceremony on September 14. It's quite likely Widow's Bay will earn even more wins.

For example, Matthew Rhys, who stars as Mayor Thom Loftis, has been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in Comedy Series, and the show has also been nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Comedy Series. All of those category winners will be announced during the primetime ceremony, but the fact that Widow's Bay already won eight awards certainly bodes well for the series.

Widow's Bay was created by Parks and Recreation writer Katie Dippold. Rhys' Mayor Tom Loftis does whatever he can to keep the coastal town open and draw in tourism, despite otherworldly and supernatural threats and warnings from locals, especially the grizzled Wyck, played by Stephen Root. The show certainly has lots of comedy, especially the way it portrays small town bureaucracy and outlandish locals, but the series also has plenty of horror and even some Lovecraftian elements. There's an episode about a haunted hotel, for example, oppressive fog that threatens the island, and a town history that involves murder. The show premiered on April 29 and beat out Apple TV's other new hit series, Pluribus, in terms of the number of Emmy nominations for a new series.

The September 14 ceremony, hosted by Emmy-winner Mariska Hargitay, will be broadcast live on NBC from the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and will stream live and on demand on Peacock. Meanwhile, it was announced back in June that Widow's Bay will return for a second season.
