Hulu: Pizza Movie cast and trailer are horror-adjacent

Hulu’s Pizza Movie seems to be categorized as a “stoner comedy”, but the trailer definitely has some horror style overtones. There’s blood (though it appears to be an hallucination), and a few of the stars have some pretty impressive horror / thriller credentials under their belts.

In Pizza Movie, best buds Jack and Montgomery are college students who just don’t seem to fit in. After a hard day of making fools of themselves and being bullied, the two just want to have a fun night…so they take some pills that they find in a box marked “mints.”

Soon, the night disintegrates into chaos as the two begin to experience terrifying hallucinations involving exploding heads and other surreal, often gory events. When they find out that these particular pills should only be taken with pizza to offset the craziness, their mission becomes traversing the two floors to the lobby of their dorm in order to pick up the pizza they have ordered.

At some point, they are joined by Lizzy, a popular girl who for whatever reason, takes one of the pills and agrees to help them get to the elusive pizza that will make everything better.

Pizza Movie debuted at SXSW, and the reviews I have read are actually pretty positive. It’s fast-paced, ridiculous, and apparently genuinely funny. Plus, judging by the trailer (which you can watch at the end of this article), there is a hefty dose of gross-out gore…so count me in!

The cast for Hulu’s Pizza Movie is very solid

Gaten Matarazzo (Jack) is mostly known as Dustin from Stranger Things, and I don’t think I trust anyone who doesn’t like Dustin! His interactions with Sean Giambrone as Montgomery look hilarious judging by the trailer. Giambrone is known for his voice work on Kim Possible, The Secret Life of Pets 2, The Emoji Movie …none of them horror related. But he also appeared in an episode of R. L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: The Series.

Lulu Wilson, who portrays Lizzy is one of my favorite young horror stars. She was only 11 years old when she appeared in Ouija: Origin of Evil, and she is the main reason that sequel is far better than the original. The same goes for Annabelle: Creation, which was released a year later.

She played the young Shirley Crain in The Haunting of Hill House, young Madeline in The Fall of the House of Usher, and portrayed the title character in Becky, The Wrath of Becky and the upcoming  The Last Temptation of Becky.

Pizza Movie will begin streaming on Hulu April 3.
