Netflix will be presenting a new original sci-fi/thriller in August called The Last House, and it takes us into a terrifying scenario. Tudum’s synopsis is “The Last House centers on a family who are sealed into their home with no way out. If that doesn’t sound nightmarish enough, their resources are running thin, and they must work together to survive not only a lack of essentials but also the mysterious, looming threat that is keeping them trapped inside.”
We all remember the COVID shutdown, right? Everyone was encouraged to stay home as much as possible, and the more sociable among us (and by that, I mean me and others like me) nearly lost our minds. I mean, I actually looked forward to leaving the house to go to the grocery store.
But imagine if you were stuck inside with only your family members for company, and couldn’t even go outside for fresh air or groceries. Yikes.
That’s what Ann (Gretal Lee, Russian Doll) and Jason (Wagner Moura, Narcos) and their two kids are forced to do in The Last House. Lee said she was intrigued by the story because she always loved reading “survivalist stories with a twist.” Moura promises the film has many twists and layers to keep viewers invested in the story.
Lee describes Ann as “a rock” who uses her love of family to keep her strong, both emotionally and physically. And Moura says Jason is determined to protect his wife and kids, which means he has to try to remain calm and cool under the immense pressure.
Matthew Robinson (Love and Monsters) wrote the script, and Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me) directed. Leterrier says The Last House “challenges the idea of a safe haven, turning a family home into a hostile environment where survival demands unity.”
The Last House will make its debut on Netflix August 7.

Now let’s talk about the trailer for The Last House, which you can see at the end of this article. We see the family in their house when it begins to rain, and then they literally cannot open the door or windows because they are sealed in by what looks like a layer of ice. As they try to remain calm for their relatively young children, Ann and Jason discover that they are not the only people experiencing this frightening event. It appears it is world-wide.
And as time goes on (day 1,183!!), they must figure out how to survive with a limited amount of groceries on hand. Not only that, it appears there are some sort of creatures/monsters outside).
Dear readers, I don’t know about you, but I am going to add The Last House to my viewing calendar right now.
