Netflix true crime doc Death of the Pastor's Wife is shocking and sad

Netflix has been on a real roll with their true crime docuseries lately. The Crash, Maternal Instinct, and A Toxic Love Story are all recent Netflix docuseries that captured everyone’s attention, and started a lot of online conversations. Now the newest doc, Death of the Pastor’s Wife is the subject of conversations, online speculation, and podcasts.
Death of the Pastor’s Wife is a three-episode docuseries that explores the death of Mica Miller. While her death was considered to be self-inflicted, the actions of her husband John-Paul (known as JP) before and after are certainly unsettling.
The series opens with Mica’s 911 call on April 27, 2024. She is speaking calmly, not crying or hysterical, but what she says clearly causes the dispatcher to go on high alert. She wants to make sure her location is known, because she is going to kill herself, and wants her family to be able to find her.
Mica was located in Lumber River State Park in North Carolina, her body floating face down in a river. She had died of a gunshot to the head, and the gun was found nearby, along with two live rounds and a spent shell. But, when we look at Mica’s history with JP, the facts aren’t so simple after all.
Mica first met JP when he was the pastor at Solid Rock Church, and she was only 16 at the time (he was 15 years older, and married). He made her the choir leader, a leadership role that was very unusual for a teen to hold, and he became a mentor of sorts.
Although Mica married her first husband when she was 18, she and JP eventually began an affair, and it destroyed both of their marriages. JP made a confession to his church, who somehow just accepted it and moved along, and he and Mica were later married.
Death of the Pastor's Wife presents shocking facts
JP Miller is one giant red flag. To be completely blunt, he groomed Mica from the time she was 16. After they were married, he expected her to be completely devoted to him. The facts, as her friends and family members learned were alarming. She had his name tattooed on her body, she asked her friends to not call her before 11:00 a.m., because he didn’t want her to get out of bed before him. He expected sex four or five times a day, and became belligerent if she didn’t comply. She had time limits as to how long she could be away from him.
There is a lot of alarming video footage included in Death of the Pastor’s Wife, including snippets of his narcissistic sermons, wherein he would preach about how it is a wife’s duty to please her husband, and accept his sexual advances. To deny him was equated to homosexuality, adultery, etc. Basically, a wife’s purpose is to serve her husband.
One video shows his over-the-top emotional reaction not long after his affair with Mica was known; he is laying on the ground crying, and speaking in an extremely high pitched voice about how much he wants his family back. It’s weird…really weird.
JP had Mica hospitalized twice, claiming she was experiencing psychotic breaks, and at one point he was injecting her with testosterone so she could keep up with his sex drive. Folks, he was controlling her in every way he knew how, and she eventually left him.
Unfortunately, his efforts to control her continued, and we all know how it ends. By all means, watch Death of Pastor’s Wife if you haven’t already, but know that there is even more to this story than the three episodes could hold.
