Fans of the Silent Hill horror franchise can now stream Return to Silent Hill in the comfort of their own homes. As of Friday, June 12, Return to Silent Hill is available to watch at your leisure on Hulu.
In 1999, Silent Hill began as a video game in which a man named Harry Mason tries to find his missing daughter in a town called Silent Hill. The game was incredibly popular, and is often cited as one of the best video games made…so naturally, a movie was sure to follow.
The highly successful first film was released in 2006, and there were some changes made from the premise of the game. In it, Rose Da Silva (Radha Mitchell) and her husband Christopher (Sean Bean) have adopted a daughter named Sharon. Sharon begins sleepwalking and has many bad dreams about a town that was abandoned in the 70s due to an underground coal seam fire. That town is, of course, Silent Hill.
Desperate to help her daughter, Rose takes Sharon with her to Silent Hill, where Rose crashes her car and is rendered unconscious. When she awakens, Sharon is gone, and she must now search the creepy, foggy, smokey town to find her, encountering strange creatures and beings along the way.
A sequel to Silent Hill was released in 2012
Six years later, Silent Hill: Revelation was released in theatres telling the story of Heather Mason (Adelaide Clemens), whose father has moved them around frequently for the past few years. He also changes their names often, and has told Heather that they have to stay on the run because he killed a man in self-defense. He has always told his daughter that her mother died in a car crash.
In reality – as Heather discovers on her 18th birthday – she is actually Sharon Da Silva, and her adoptive mother Rose was trapped in the town of Silent Hill after freeing Sharon. Of course, all of this results in Sharon searching out the town.
Silent Hill: Revelation was not received well critically, and only did ok at the box office, which is probably why it took 14 years for a third film to be released.

That third film is Return to Silent Hill, which hit theatres in January of this year. Made on a budget of $23 million, it has grossed $47.9 million worldwide, despite weak reviews from critics.
In Return to Silent Hill, the main character is James Sunderland, “an emotional wreck who receives a letter from his estranged girlfriend asking him to come find her in the mysterious, fog-haunted town of Silent Hill. In doing so, James is foced to face not only his inner demons, but external ones.”
Return to Silent Hill features Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson as James and Mary, and was directed by Christophe Gans, who also directed the original film.
