Sinners sets new record with 16 Oscar nominations; Frankenstein, Weapons, and The Ugly Stepsister also receive nominations

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 2026 Oscar nominations this morning from Los Angeles, and it was a heck of a showing for the horror genre. Sinners and Frankenstein both earned several nominations, and Sinners made history with an eye-popping 16 nominations. Weapons and The Ugly Stepsister also received nominations.
Sinners breaks records with 16 Oscar nominations
Writer/director Ryan Coogler's period vampire movie was a major box office success when it released last summer, with a theatrical release that had legs and a soundtrack that played on repeat. Now, with its 16 nominations, it broke the previous record, which was a three-way tie between All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997), and La La Land (2016). Sinners received the following nominations:

Frankenstein also receives multiple Oscar nominations
Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein also received several nominations. Hopefully, this means the film will return to theaters. Upon its initial release in November, it had limited theatrical screenings before it streamed on Netflix. Here are the nominations Frankenstein received:

Horror fans will be happy to know that Amy Madigan received a nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her iconic performance as Aunt Gladys in Weapons. Meanwhile, The Ugly Stepsister has been nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. The horror-adjacent Bugonia was also nominated in multiple categories, including Best Original Score, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress in a Leading Role- Emma Stone, and Best Picture.
When will the Oscars ceremony be held?
The 98th Academy Awards will take place on March 15 at 7 P.M. ET. The ceremony will telecast live on ABC and be available to stream on Hulu.
