Stranger Things isn't over quite yet- Netflix to release documentary about Season 5

A production still from Stranger Things Season 5

Though Stranger Things technically ended on New Year's Eve, with the conclusion of Season 5, Netflix isn't ready to say goodbye just yet. The documentary, One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things Season 5, will stream beginning January 12.

One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 is directed by Martina Radwan, and per Netflix, it's "an inside look at the years of effort and craft that went into the final installment of the Duffer Brothers' generation-defining series." In a press release, Radwan said that she's "endlessly grateful to the Duffer Brothers for trusting me with a front-row seat to this incredibly journey." The statement adds that she spent an entire year on set with them and that it was an "absolute thrill."

The Duffer Brothers also commented on the documentary, noting how behind-the-scenes features of Lord of the Rings made filmmaking seem possible to them. They stated in a release, "Growing up in Durham, North Carolina, we dreamed of becoming filmmakers- but Hollywood felt impossibly far away," they said.

The Stranger Things creators continued, "Everything changed when we watched the behind-the-scenes documentaries for The Lord of the Rings - on-the-ground films that showed the real nuts and bolts of how a massive production actually gets made. We saw how stressed Peter Jackson was and thought: yep, that's the dream. With the decline of physical media, that kind of behind-the-scenes storytelling has largely disappeared. We wanted to bring it back. One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things Season 5- beautifully captured and directed by Martina Radwan - is our attempt to do just that. If you love Stranger Things, or if you're simply curious how a major Hollywood production comes to life, this one's for you."

Netflix released a trailer for the documentary, which shows the final table reading and the actors on set, saying their goodbyes after working together for nearly a decade. The documentary will also address how the Duffer Brothers grappled with Eleven's (Millie Bobby Brown) ambiguous fate in the finale. It looks like the documentary will showcase the show's massive fandom and cultural impact, too.

Meanwhile, there is an animated series forthcoming called Stranger Things: Tales from '85. The series will take place between season 2 and 3 and will feature familiar characters placed in new situations. Though the Duffer Brothers are involved as executive producers, they're not serving as showrunners. Instead, that's being handled by Eric Robles. The original cast members are not voicing the characters in the new animated series, which is set to debut on Netflix later this year.
