The zombie horror-comedy webcomic ShootAround has become such a success that it's garnered 28 million views on WEBTOON. Now, fans can look forward to a live-action film adaptation.
WEBTOON Productions and the Oscar-winning studio Lion Forge Entertainment announced this week that they've teamed up to move forward with the film adaptation. Aiyana K. White (Severance, The Night Agent) will pen the feature. ShootAround, created by Suspu (Susanna Nousiainen), follows a girls' basketball team as they join forces with the boys' team to survive 24 hours locked inside of their high school, where they face off against zombies in a life-or-death battle. Like the webcomic, the movie will focus on a YA audience and include plenty of undead action and teenage drama.
“ShootAround is a fresh, high-energy take on both the zombie and teen sports genres, balancing humor and horror with a character-driven edge,” David Steward II, Founder and CEO of Lion Forge Entertainment, said in a press statement, while adding, “Partnering with WEBTOON Productions and Aiyana brings together an incredible creative team to reimagine this fan-favorite story in a way that feels fun and wildly entertaining for today’s audiences.”
Stephanie Sperber, President and Chief Content Officer of Lion Forge Entertainment, said that ShootAround's global fanbase and high concept made it ripe for a film adaptation. "We’re always looking for standout IP with the potential to grow beyond a single format, and ShootAround is exactly that,” she said in a press statement. “It’s a bold, high-concept world with a built-in global fanbase and the kind of dynamic characters that lend themselves to long-term franchise storytelling. This partnership with WEBTOON Productions is a natural extension of our strategy to nurture and expand compelling IP into enduring, multi-platform franchises that resonate with audiences everywhere.”
Meanwhile, White said that she "devoured" all 70 chapters of the webcomic's first season in a single sitting and that she was drawn to not only how funny and absurd it is but also the fact it has heart. While White will write the film, there's no word yet on who will direct.
Besides her work as co-producer on Severance for Apple, White has an extensive resume. She's currently in the Stargate room for Amazon Prime, and prior to that, she was an ESE on The Night Agent for Netflix, as well as a story editor on Grey Shadows for Priyanka Chopra/Amazon. White got her start on Showtime's Super Pumped as a staff writer. Additionally, her feature film, The Weatherman, has Amy Aniobi's SuperSpecial attached to produce, alongside Jason Bateman's Aggregate Films.
There's no word yet on when the ShootAround adaptation will start filming or when it will be released, but we'll share that news once we have it.
