Lionsgate will be releasing a 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital copy of the cult classic film Repo! The Genetic Opera, and you can pre-order it right now. It's the first time this classic film has been available on 4K, and fans won’t want to miss it.
This gothic rock opera is set in the near future, when an epidemic has killed off 99% of the humans on earth. The epidemic causes organ failure, and a greedy corporation called GeneCo offers a payment plan in exchange for organ transplants. If someone misses a payment, “Repo Men” show up to repossess the organs.
Darren Smith, who wrote the screenplay, has said he was inspired after a friend was going through the bankruptcy process, and had many of their possessions taken as a result. Repo! Was first written as a stage play, then adapted as a short film. The short was used to pitch the idea to studios, and Lionsgate picked it up to adapt into a feature film.
And yes, this bloody tale includes a staggering 56 musical numbers (thus the word “opera” in the title). Appearing in Repo! The Genetic Opera are Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas), Alexa Vega (The Remaining), Anthony Stewart Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Sarah Brightman (The Phantom of the Opera), Paris Hilton (House of Wax), Bill Moseley (House of 1000 Corpses), Nivek Ogre (Evil), Terrance Zdunich (The Devil’s Carnival), and Sarah Power (The Hexecutioners). There is even a brief appearance by Joan Jett.
Much like the cult film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, shadow casts often appear at screenings of Repo! to this day, performing the musical numbers in theatres.
