A remake of one of the most influential found footage movies of all time is moving forward. It's been reported by Dread Central that a Blair Witch Project remake is apparently still happening. Dylan Clark (Transfigure, Portrait of God) has been tapped to direct.
It was already reported by multiple outlets back in 2024 that Lionsgate and Blumhouse were teaming up for the Blair Witch remake, but since then, there's been little news to follow up with until now. Additionally, Jason Blum specifically will be teaming up with producer Roy Lee (The Ring, Godzilla, It) on The Blair Witch Project remake. These are major heavy hitters who certainly have the money to get this remake off the ground.
As for the choice of director, Clark has earned some buzz for his short films, specifically Portrait of God. It's currently being adapted into a feature-length film by Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures and Jordan Peele's Monkey Paw Productions for Universal Pictures. So, it's clear some of the horror bigwigs have a lot of trust and faith in him.
The Blair Witch Project was groundbreaking when it first released in 1999. Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, the film's success was due, in part, to the genius guerilla marketing campaign. During the early days of the internet, the marketing team created a website, complete with lore and missing persons flyers of the actors, Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael C. Williams. When the film was selected to play the Sundance Film Festival as part of its prestigious Midnight category, the team handed out postcards and missing persons flyers. It would be incredibly hard to replicate the genius marketing tactics that worked for the first movie. The film sort of fell at the right place and the right time, bolstered by the internet's infant stages.
The found footage classic follows the three student filmmakers deep into the Frederick County, Maryland woods, where they're attacked by either the Blair Witch or another presence that the viewer never sees. The film was a massive success at the box office, though it only cost $22,000 to film and took eight days to shoot. It earned nearly $250 million at the global box office, making it one of the most successful independent movies of all time.
The film had a sequel, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, which released in 2000. That was followed by Blair Witch in 2016. Neither film captured the stellar box office success or cultural legacy of the first movie. We'll see what Clark has in store as the remake plans move forward.
