Last year marked the 40th anniversary of George A. Romero's Day of the Dead. To celebrate, Shout Factory! will release a special 40th anniversary edition of the movie this June on 4K and Blu-ray. The anniversary edition includes loads of special features, and it's already available for preorder through GRUV.
Day of the Dead is the third movie in Romero's initial zombie trilogy, following Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead. It follows a group of scientists and military men who struggle to work together in underground bunkers and mines during the zombie apocalypse. The movie stars Lori Cardille as Dr. Sarah Bowman, Terry Alexander as John, Jarlath Conroy as Bill McDermott, and Joseph Pilato as the human antagonist, Captain Henry Rhodes. The movie also stars Sherman Howard as fan favorite Bub, a zombie who learns basic actions and even some speech at the hands of Dr. Matthew Logan (Richard Liberty).
The film contains some really impressive special effects, thanks to Romero's longtime collaborator, Tom Savini, and also Greg Nicotero, who was Savini's apprentice during filming. Following his work on Day of the Dead, Nicotero would work on several other horror movies and also The Walking Dead.
