A24’s new psychological thriller Mother Mary is set to release in theatres later this month. A24 is best known for their “elevated” horror and thriller movies, so there is a lot of interest in this one, which Mother Mary director David Lowery calls “a weird, weird film.” If the director says it, it must be so!
Mother Mary stars Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway as a very famous pop singer named Mary who is preparing for a comeback performance. She reunites with her once-friend Sam to have her create a costume for the performance, and “long buried wounds rise to the surface.”
The images and video from the film (particularly the lavish costumes) make Mary appear to be a mash-up of Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift (more on that in a minute). A24 just released a behind the scenes “first look” video for Mother Mary, which you can see at the end of this article.
In addition to Hathaway, Mother Mary features Michaela Coel (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) as Sam, Hunter Schafer (Cuckoo), and FKA twigs (The Crow remake). Hathaway performs the original music, which was written and produced by Charli xcx, FKA twigs, and singer/songwriter/musician/musical producer Jack Antonoff.

And speaking of Jack Antonoff, there is a Taylor Swift connection with Mother Mary. Not only has Antonoff worked extensively with Swift, director Lowery says he was very inspired by the mega pop star’s Reputation stadium tour. Reputation was a much darker-themed album and tour from Taylor’s others and Lowery considers the Reputation concert film to be “one of the best concert films ever.” He said in an interview with billboard that he did a shot by shot analysis of three numbers from the film in order to create some very similar sequences.
Mother Mary will open in theatres nationwide on April 24
Lowery said part of his inspiration for the character of Mary herself was taken from imagining Taylor Swift 10 to 15 years from now. That’s an interesting premise, since Swift has been a major star in the music world since 2006, when she was only 17 years old.
Anne Hathaway, a seasoned actor, had to go through nearly two years of dance training and singing lessons to prepare for the role of Mary. By all accounts, the intense training and practicing definitely worked. You can see how she performs in the trailer for Mother Mary, as well as the first look video below.
