Bored and not sure what to watch? Here are the top 5 movies on Shudder

I don’t know what the weather is like where you are, but I live in Florida, and is hot right now! That means all I want to do is soak up the AC and watch horror movies, usually on Shudder.

But there are a lot of horror films on Shudder, and it can be overwhelming sometimes, so The Horror Lounge is here to help. Links are added for the ones we at The Horror Lounge have reviewed, just in case you want more details than these brief descriptions provide.

Let’s take a look at the top five movies currently on Shudder (as of May 13, 2026).

1.      Whistle – This Shudder film had a brief theatrical run before it hit the streaming platform on May 8. Chrys is a transfer student who discovers an odd skull-shaped whistle in her new locker. As it turns out, the locker used to belong to the high school’s star basketball player, Mason.

As Chrys and her new friends discover, the whistle is actually an Aztec Death Whistle, and blowing it results in your future method of death hitting you much earlier than it should have.

2.      Dolly – If you enjoyed The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, Wrong Turn, or other films known as “backwoods horror”, Dolly should be right up your gruesome ally. Macy and Chase are just a young couple hiking in the woods and having a grand old time until they encounter a large, terrifying person wearing a child’s dress and a porcelain doll mask.

Soon, Macy is abducted and treated as if she were a baby, complete with diapers, baby bottles…and far worse. The gore and ick level in Dolly is pretty high, but it’s a fun, fast-paced ride with great acting performances, particularly by Fabienne Therese as Macy and pro wrestler Max the Impaler as Babygirl/Dolly.

Shudder has added another video game-based horror film

3.      The Mortuary Assistant – Gamers should like this movie, which is based on the popular video game of the same title. Rebecca is trying to get her life together after spending the last year in addiction recovery, and has found a job at a mortuary. When she is asked to work the night shift, her boss Raymond requests that she embalm a body, and then burn it.  Though that seems like an odd thing to do, she complies.

Afterwards, all hell starts to break loose, as she begins to hallucinate, and blacks out, waking up in her own home. Things only get worse from there, and Rebecca must contend with living dead creatures and demons.

4.      Heresy – In this Dutch folk horror tale (which has been compared to Robert Eggers’ The Witch), a woman named Frieda is considered to be useless when she can’t become pregnant. As the townspeople, as well as her own husband, ridicule her and try to make her feel “less than”, Frieda finds an escape.

She ends up “caught between her faith, fanatic townsfolk, and the dark forces lurking in the woods.”

5.      Night Patrol – Xavier is a former gang member who is now a police officer for the LAPD. He and his partner Ethan are assigned to work the housing projects where Xavier grew up. But Ethan has higher goals in sight: he wants to become a part of a secret task force that operates after dark – a task force known as the Night Patrol.

But as Xavier soon discovers, the Night Patrol is harboring a deep, dark secret – one that his brother Wazi observes in person. Now Wazi is a target, and Xavier has to decide which side he wants to be on.
