Play it loud: Shudder announces V/H/S Mixtape, set to stream October 9

Shudder just dropped the needle on some exciting news. The ninth installment of the V/H/S franchise, V/H/S Mixtape, will release on October 9 on the streamer.

The latest in the long-running found footage series will have a unified theme that explores the power of music and audio to haunt, possess, and even destroy. According to press materials, the latest anthology will include cosmic horror, psychological suspense, splatter, and practical effects.

It'll feature all new segments from Ernest Dickerson (Bones, Tales from the Crypt: Demon Night), hip-hop artist RZA, David Moreau (MadS, Them), and Renee Zahn, whose segment includes puppets from Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

Sticking with the music theme, the new installment will feature original music video interludes from filmmaker and musician Flying Lotus, alongside a music video debut from filmmaker Tobias Forge. Flying Lotus previously contributed to V/H/S 99, and his latest movie, Ash, is available on Shudder. Additionally, shock rockers GWAR make a featured appearance.

Producers for the ninth V/H/S installment include Josh Goldbloom, Steven Schnieder, Roy Lee, Michale Schreiber, Brad Miska, and executive producers Ben Ross and Rami Yassin. The franchise's previous installment, V/H/S Halloween, became the most-watched exclusive film premiere of 2025 for Shudder and AMC+. It was also Shudder's biggest acquisition weekend of the year.

The initial V/H/S movie released in 2012 and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival prior to its theatrical release. Eventually, the series had more specific unified themes, like being set in 1994 or 1999. There was also a sci-fi installment and last year's Halloween-centric entry. Through the years, some major heavyweights directed segments, including Ti West, Adam Wingard, David Bruckner, and Gigi Saul Guerrero, just to name a few.

Additionally, before some of these directors made it big in the horror genre, the franchise served as a means to get their name out there. For instance, long before Radio Silence directed the Ready or Not movies and Scream 5 and Scream 6, they directed the segment "10/31/98" from V/H/S 2 in 2013. Their entry follows a group of friends filming a Halloween party who stumble upon a cult compound under siege. To this day, the franchise blends well-known directors, like Ernest Dickerson, with up-and-comers, and a majority of the segments still prioritize practical effects.

We'll have to see what V/H/S Mixtape and its directors have in store and how their segments will adhere to the music theme. The latest installment will stream on Shudder beginning October 9.
