The Philadelphia Unnamed Film Festival returns in August with over 70 films and a punk rock attitude

The Philadelphia Unnamed Film Festival (PUFF) returns for its 11th year with plenty of genre-bending independent movies, including lots of horror films. The fest will run from August 25-August 30 at Theatre Exile and promises to stay true to its tagline: underground, unconventional, and unforgettable.

Let's look at some of this year's highlights and main events.

Headline Event: Camp PUFF (August 27)

This event is dubbed a "nostalgic, retro evening" that will occur under the stars. Hosted by local filmmaker Jack Stallion, this camp-themed event will include snacks, libations, and a lineup of campy films. Attendees are encouraged to bring camp gear. Tickets for this event are available as a special $30 Camp PUFF Pass, which includes access to the evening's lineup of films and a collectable embroidered Camp PUFF patch.

Headlining this particular screening is Cramps! A Period Piece, a John Waters-like, coming-of-age body horror movie about a young woman whose cramps manifest into a horrifying monster.

Bizarre Night (August 26)

This night will showcase the weirder and wilder side of underground cinema and will feature the following films:

• Cain Come Home: This is described as a surreal, time-bending ghost story about two estranged brothers whose lives are altered by a family tragedy.

• Bizarre Block: This is PUFF's signature late night shorts program, showcasing experimental films that break the mold of conventional storytelling.

Fright Night Double Feature (August 28)

As the title suggest, this evening will include two feature films:

• The Killing Cell: This one is described as a brutal and relentless entry into the found footage genre. It follows five teenagers who break into an abandoned prison that is apparently haunted. As they explore the location, they discover that what inhabits it is more dangerous than the paranormal. The film occurs during the summer of 2006.

  
  

• The Barn Part III: This sequel occurs years after the events of The Barn Part II. The group still fears that the three evil ones will return to finish the harvest. The sequel promises plenty of over-the-top carnage.

All Day Saturday (August 29)

Hosted by Mr. Lobo, this event runs from 12 pm-12 am and features a marathon of films, including:

• Quince: Hailing from Mexico, this film is described as a striking coming-of age horror movie. The film follows two friends who prepare for a quinceanera, but one girl's body transforms into something monstrous.

• Sugar Rot: After a brutal assault by an ice cream man, punk rocker Candy plays host to a mutant baby. Her body transforms into ice cream, and those around her see her as something to be consumed.

The day will also include short films and three additional unreleased indie features.
