Philadelphia is always a city that knows how to celebrate Halloween. There are numerous haunt attractions, street parties, and countless other festivities. This year, there's a new convention for spooky book lovers and writers.

The first ever FearLit, a horror and dark fiction convention, will take place on Halloween from noon-4 pm at the Venice Island Performing Arts and Recreation Center in Manayunk. The event will feature several authors, book signings, and panel discussions, and it's presented by Thrillerdelphia, the city's only independent thriller and horror bookstore.

The first annual FearLit features an impressive list of horror authors

Considering this is FearLit's first year, they have quite an impressive list of authors attending the event, including some Bram Stoker Award-winning writers and NYT bestselling authors. Some highlights include Adam Cesare (Clown in a Cornfield), Gwendolyn Kiste (In These Gilded, Ghostly Hearts), and Keith Rosson (Crone). However, the whole list is worth noting, and here it is in full:

  • Marc L. Abbott (Horror Writers Association Vice President)

  • Gregory Ashe (Hazard and Somerset)

  • Mary Berman (Until Death)

  • Adam Cesare (Clown in a Cornfield)

  • Scott Cole (Superghost)

  • Carmen Costa (Proctor)

  • Mallory Cywinski (Making Friends with Ghosts)

  • Jared Delaney (Plan 9 from Outer Space)

  • Philip Fracassi (Bram Stoker Finalist)

  • J.Q. Gagliastro (The Diary of a Sugarbaby)

  • E.J. Green (2024 Wigleaf Longlist)

  • Taylor Grothe (Hollow/Lethal Kiss)

  • J.D. Holden (J.D.'s Superhero Complex)

  • James Kaine (The Final Final Girl)

  • Alma Katsu (NYT Bestseller)

  • Gwendolyn Kriste (four-time Bram Stoker Award-winner)

  • M.A. Knight (Feverchain)

  • Padriac Maroney (Escaping Death)

  • Jo Piazza (Bestselling novelist)

  • C.S. Poe (Lamda Literary Finalist)

  • Kevin Redzinski (I Was Freddy Too!)

  • Jason Rekulak (Bestselling Novelist)

  • Keith Rosson (Fever House)

  • David Simmons (Fetty on the Switches)

  • Mauve Perle Tahat (Spatial Residue)

  • Mathilda Zeller (It Looks Like You in the Dark)

Attendees will have the chance to meet and mingle with the authors and have books signed. Additionally, the event will feature conversations about the horror genre, publishing, and various other topics. Unlike, say, an academic literary conference, the panel discussions, eight in total, will be a rapid-fire format and feature a variety of fast-moving topics, including on writing craft, monsters, setting/place, fear, and the genre's "sharp edges." Based on the event's description, it sounds like the panels will be beneficial to writers and readers alike.
