May was a pretty fantastic month for horror movies, with both Obsession and Backrooms opening in theatres. Obsession in particular hit big, taking in over $229 million worldwide. It is currently the tenth highest grossing film of 2026, in any genre.
Backrooms is hot on its heels, and is currently at $216 million worldwide. A24 has to be very happy right now, because Backrooms is also their highest grossing film to date.
June looks like it’s going to be a successful month for the horror (and horror adjacent) genres as well, so let’s look at what’s coming to us in the next few weeks.
June 12:
Disclosure Day (Theatres) – Steven Spielberg directed this science fiction film, which stars Emily Blunt as Margaret, a news meteorologist. During a live broadcast, she suddenly begins speaking in a strange language, and soon enough, a company called Wardex is after her, suspecting that the language is extraterrestrial.

It’s nice to see Spielberg back again, and even better that this sounds like one of his huge summer blockbusters from days gone by (John Williams even composed the score). Disclosure also features Colin Firth, Josh O’Connor, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo.
There is new horror coming to streaming as well
Find Your Friends (Shudder) – Five besties head out for a fun girls’ trip to Joshua Tree, but things aren’t so fun when they end up feeling very unwelcome in a desert town with some very negative vibes.
Soon the friends begin to turn on each other, and end up violently fighting for control.

I Am Frankelda (Netflix) – This Mexican stop motion animated film is about Francisca Imelda, a young woman in 19th century Mexico who longs to become a horror writer. Though her grandmother strongly disapproves of her plans, she writes about a place called the Topus Terrenus, not knowing that the place actually exists in a parallel dimension.
Leviticus (Theatres) – Joe Bird gave a heart-wrenching performance as young Riley in Talk to Me, so I would see Leviticus based on the fact that he is one of the leads. Naim (Bird) and Ryan (Stacy Clausen) are friends whose friendship blossoms into romance. Since Naim’s mother is very religious (as is the town they live in), the two try to hide their relationship.
When they are outed, a weird type of conversion therapy is performed – one that brings about an entity that takes the form of their deepest desires – each other.
June 26:
Strung (Peacock) – Described as a psychological thriller, Strung was produced by Jason Blum and Tyler Perry. It premiered at the American Black Film Festival in May of this year.
“A talented violinist takes a prestigious job as a music tutor for the gifted daughter of an influential and enigmatic family. As she becomes entangled in their opulent world, unsettling secrets begin to surface, forcing her to question her safety, her dreams, and even her sanity.” Chloe Bailey stars.
