May was quite a stacked month for horror movie lovers, with the release of Hokum, Obsession, and Passenger. Summer looks just as promising, with a sequel to a horror comedy franchise favorite, a new Evil Dead movie, and plenty more. Now that it's Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of summer, here’s what we can look forward to seeing in theaters this season.
Backrooms (Releases May 29)
A24’s Backrooms is one of the buzziest upcoming horror movies. Directed by Kane Parsons and written by Will Soodik, the movie is based on Parsons’ web series and inspired by the Backrooms creepypasta. The movie stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell. The movie follows Dr. Mary Kline (Reinsve), who ventures into an otherworldly dimension in search of her missing patient, Clark (Ejiofor).
Scary Movie (Releases June 5)
The Wayans Brothers have returned to the Scary Movie franchise, and the trailer promises that they’ll spoof Halloween 2018, Weapons, Sinners, Smile, The Substance, and of course, Scream. So much has changed since the last entry in the franchise, so it’ll be really interesting to see how they tackle some of the latest horror trends. They’ve also promised to offend everyone with the latest installment. The new movie also reunites a lot of the original characters and actors, including Anna Farris as Cindy, Regina Hall as Brenda, Marlon Wayans as Shorty, Cheri Oteri as Gail Hailstorm, and Dave Sheridan as Deputy Doofus.
Leviticus (Releases June 19)
Leviticus already played a slew of film festivals earlier this year, including Sundance, South by Southwest, and Overlook and generally earned positive reviews. The queer supernatural horror movie follows Niam (Joe Brid), a teen who moves into a devoutly religious Australian town with his mom (Mia Wasikowska). He then forms a romance with his classmate Ryan (Stacy Clausen), but when it’s exposed, the boys are subject to conversion therapy. This releases a violent entity that takes the form of the person they desire most, which is each other.
Evil Dead Burn (Releases July 10)
We don’t have a ton of plot details yet regarding Evil Dead Burn, but we do know it focuses on a grieving widow named Alice (Souheila Yacoub). After the sudden loss of her husband, she seeks solace at her in-laws’ secluded estate. Once there, she discovers the Necronomicon (Book of the Dead), which apparently belonged to her husband’s grandfather. Wanting to reunite with her spouse, Alice releases demonic forces, which possess her in-laws.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma (Releases August 7)
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is writer/director Jane Schoenbrun’s follow-up to 2024’s critically acclaimed I Saw the TV Glow. The movie is a love letter to 80s slashers and stars Gillian Anderson and Hannah Einbinder. The synopsis reads, “"After years of slapdash sequels and waning fandom, the Camp Miasma slasher franchise is handed over to an enthusiastic young director for resurrection. But when she visits the original movie's star, a now-reclusive actress shrouded in mystery, the two women fall into a blood-soaked world of desire, fear, and delirium."
Insidious: Out of the Further (Releases August 21)
The sixth installment in the Insidious franchise follows a new family and stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, and Lin Shaye, who returns to provide some connective tissue to the broader lure. The movie follows young mother Gemma (Eve), who raises her daughter in the house she grew up in. She then discovers she can travel into The Further, where she possesses the ability to bring back what lives there.
Other summer horror movie highlights
Besides the films listed above, we also have plenty of other movies to look forward to, including the nautical thriller Chum (June 5), the deep-sea creature feature Kraken (June 12), the supernatural western Rose of Nevada (June 19), the slasher CAMP (June 26), and The Ice Cream Man (August 7).
There are certainly plenty of scares to be had this summer!
