If you haven't watched From's Season 4 premiere yet, then consider waiting to read this article because it will contain a few spoilers about the episode, titled "The Arrival."
Season 3 of From ended with a brutal cliffhanger and the introduction of a major psychological villain, "The Man in Yellow," who killed Jim (Eion Bailey) by ripping his throat out. Season 4 kicks off where the last season ended, with the Man in Yellow standing over Jim as his throat gushes blood. As Jim gasps and suffers through his final moments, the Man in Yellow threatens that it's all just started, and it's evident he has major plans, though the scale of them is unclear at this point.
Meanwhile, Season 4's premiere also deals with the aftermath of Boyd's (Harold Perrineau) methods of interrogating Elgin (Nathan D. Simmons) over the whereabouts of Fatima last season (Pegah Gahfoori), who, it turns out, birthed one of the monsters that Boyd apparently killed but was then resurrected, adding yet another twist to the show. It'll be interesting to see how Boyd wrestles with his first steps down a much darker path and the realization that maybe they can't kill the monsters, that they'll continue to resurrect. Perrineau continues to deliver stellar acting, and that's certainly the case in this premiere, as his character grapples with maintaining his sanity and moral compass as the odds of escape from the time loop grow dimmer.
Meanwhile, Jim's family, including his wife Tabitha (Catalina Sandino Moreno), and their two children, Julie (Hannah Cheramy) and Ethan (Simon Webster), haven't heard from him and don't yet know he's dead. They'll likely learn about that in the next episode, and man, will it be devastating. Further, the Man in Yellow transforms himself into a Bible-thumping girl, Sophia (Julia Doyle), and infiltrates the community.
From: Season 4 sets up high stakes and also sparks more questions
"The Arrival" establishes so many high stakes that will come to a boiling point soon. As already mentioned, Jim's family is unaware that he's dead. We'll soon see how they deal with that and if it'll push any of them to the breaking point. Boyd, meanwhile, is struggling even more to maintain his sanity and sense of right and wrong, and now he's unsure if they can even defeat the monsters. There's one powerful scene where he counts the number of bullets he has left incase everyone in the town has to kill themselves because they simply can't win. Meanwhile, how will Fatima react to the fact she birthed a monster, a monster everyone thought was dead? How will the town possibly keep up its morale when they realize the monsters can resurrect themselves?
Additionally, we still don't know the scope of the Man in Yellow's plans, but we've learned that he can transform into other people and has infiltrated the community. That'll have major consequences moving forward and perhaps a few more deaths, too. How will the community react when they realize Sophia isn't who she claims to be? And is there any way to actually defeat the Man in Yellow and the other monsters?
There's also a harrowing sequence where Kristi (Chloe Van Landschoot) stitches Elgin's eye and the camera barely cuts away. Even for this seasoned horror hound, that was a tough sequence to watch and also one that underscores the level of violence that the community has endured. It could also hint that between Jim's brutal death and the torture tactics used against Elgin, Season 4 won't hold back. Meanwhile, we still don't know how everyone else will react to the tactics Boyd used or the fact Sara (Avery Konrad) inflicted the worst damage upon poor Elgin. All of this will likely have major repercussions for the rest of the season.
Overall, From: Season 4's premiere was a tense, horror-fueled episode that showed Boyd struggle even more to maintain his morality. It also highlighted just how sinister the Man in Yellow is without revealing the full extent of his plan yet, and it set up major storylines for the rest of the season, including how Jim's family will react to his murder.
A new episode of From debuts each Sunday on MGM+ and Prime Video via the MGM channel.
