As we approach the deep months of winter, awards season kicks into high gear. Despite nominations in several categories, the horror genre didn't fair too well at the 2026 Golden Globes. Yet, there were a few wins and reasons to celebrate, especially for writer/director Ryan Coogler's vampire movie Sinners.
Sinners achieved seven nominations in total, including Best Picture - Drama, Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for star Michael B. Jordan's dual performance as Smoke and Stack, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, Best Director of a Motion Picture for Coogler, Best Screenplay of a Motion Picture for Coogler, Original Score for Ludwig Goransson, and Original Song for "I Lied to You."
Despite the impressive number of nominations, Sinners only took home two awards. Coogler's blues epic won Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Original Score. Still, at least horror didn't go home empty-handed, and the awards are well-earned, considering the movie's massive box office success. Worldwide, the film has grossed over $368 million, including over $279 million from its U.S. box office numbers alone.
Meanwhile, Zach Cregger's Weapons was also nominated for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein was nominated for Best Picture - Drama and Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for Oscar Isaac's role as Dr. Frankenstein. Jenna Ortega earned a nomination for Best Female Actor in a Television Series- Musical or Comedy for her role as Wednesday Addams.

One Battle After Another and Hamnet were the night's big winners. Paul Thomas Anderson's political satire won Best Picture - Musical or Comedy, while Hamnet, historical fiction about Shakespeare's life and his writing of Hamlet, was crowned Best Picture- Drama. One of its stars, Jessie Buckley, who plays a grieving mother, won a best actress award. She'll return to the big screen soon as the Bride of Frankenstein in The Bride!, directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal and set in 1930s Chicago.
Though it's not always the case, there is often overlap between Golden Globe nominations and Academy Award nominations. Sinners, Frankenstein, Weapons, and The Ugly Stepsister have all made short lists in various Academy Awards categories. The official nominations will be announced on January 22.
While we personally would have liked horror to have done better at the Golden Globes, we're happy for Sinners and for the other genre movies that were nominated. Hopefully, horror receives a little more love at the Oscars.
