John Carpenter releases new track titled "The Ferryman" from forthcoming metal album Cathedral

Iconic horror director and synth maestro John Carpenter, along with his longtime musical collaborators Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies, just released a new track called "The Ferryman" from their forthcoming project, Cathedral. Like the previously released song, "Lord of the Underground," this new tune arrives with a visualizer that includes previously unreleased artwork from the accompanying graphic novel of the same name.

Cathedral includes a new studio album, releasing August 7 through Sacred Bones Records, with Carpenter's very first graphic novel, which is set for publication on August 4 through Storm King Comics. Each track on the album coincides with a chapter in the graphic novel, and the album's liner notes guide listeners through the story.

As The Horror Lounge reported last month, the narrative for Cathedral focuses on an abandoned church in downtown Los Angeles. It transforms from a mere empty building into a nightmare, following the killing of a police officer that draws attention to the vacated cathedral. Lieutenant Christine Marks and detectives Paul Hernandez and Steve Mayfrield are called upon to investigate. However, this leads them deep into catacombs, where they confront cosmic horror.

In a press statement upon release of "Lord of the Underground," Carpenter said he was inspired by a dream to create this multi-media project. "It was so cinematic and vivid," he said, and added, "I have to score this. It's our first heavy metal album."

The 120-page graphic novel was written by Carpenter, editor and his wife Sandy King, and Sean Sobczak. It's illustrated by Frederico De Luca and Luis Guaragna, colored by Ryan Winn, and lettered by Marshall Dillon.

Regarding the creation process, Davies said in that same press release, "The story informed everything," and added, "John would describe a scene and say, 'We need a heavy riff here.' We didn't set out to make a metal record, but it evolved that way." The director noted, "It's about making the music work...This is somewhat different sounding stuff that we've done, but it's done with the same desire in mind. In other words, put this thing no and imagine you're watching a movie. That's what we want you to do."

Preorders for the album Cathedral are now available at Sacred Bones Record's website. Additionally, preorders for the graphic novel are now available at Storm King Comic's website.
