Ryan Coogler's X-Files reboot has wrapped production on its pilot. Here's what we know so far.

The truth is out there regarding Ryan Coogler's X-Files reboot. Filming just concluded on the pilot, meaning the show is closer to becoming a reality. While Hulu has ordered a pilot episode, they haven't yet ordered a full first season. The ball is now in the streamer's court.

Here's what we know so far.

Star Himesh Patel confirms the pilot is filmed for Ryan Coogler's X-Files reboot

As we reported previously, Himsesh Patel is slated to star in Ryan Coogler's X-Files reboot, playing an FBI agent alongside Danielle Deadwyler. These will be completely new characters to the universe. Recently, Patel told Collider that the cast and crew recently completed work on the pilot, though he was guarded about the synopsis or any other details about the reboot. The actor said, "I really can't tell you much with regards to anything other than it's just a pilot, for now. We shot a pilot. We'll see what happens, but I had a great time, and everyone was great to work with, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed."

Though Patel gave very few details, in previous interviews, Coogler made clear that his plans for the reboot involve larger mythology episodes about the overarching alien conspiracy plot, coupled with the monster-of-the-week episodes. This is the formula that the original series followed and that Coogler plans to stick to.

Additionally, in a separate interview with The Direct, Patel again reiterated that he and Deadwyler won't be replacing FBI agents Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Fox Mulder (David Duchovny). He stated, "I don't want to say anything that's going to get me disappeared. Needless to say, myself and Danielle Deadwyler are playing completely new characters..."

The Direct also reported that the pilot focuses on two decorated, yet different FBI agents who form an unlikely alliance and bond after running the long-shuttered X-Files division devoted to the paranormal. Coogler wrote and directed the pilot and did so under his Proximity Media banner. The initial series creator, Chris Carter, is on board with the reboot as an executive producer, while Jennifer Yale will serve as showrunner.

Here's who else will star in Ryan Coogler's X-Files reboot

Besides Deadwyler and Patel, we reported recently that several A-listers have been cast for the reboot. This includes Amy Madigan, who recently secured an Oscar win for her role as Aunt Gladys in Weapons. Additionally, Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, Devery Jacobs, Lochlyn Munro, Tantoo Cardinal, Joel D. Montgrand, and Sofia Grace Clifton have also been cast. It's unclear yet which roles they'll play.

So far, Anderson and Duchovny have been relatively quiet about the reboot and whether or not they'd be open to reprising their roles. That said, Anderson did recently speak on record and confirmed that she's talked to Coogler about the project, and she even praised the pilot after reading its script. Will we see the return of Scully and Mulder? We'll just have to wait for an answer to that. First, Hulu needs to order an entire season of the reboot.

The X-Files initially ran for nine seasons from 1993-2002. Two additional seasons came in 2016 and 2018, and the series spawned two feature-length films, 1998's The X-Files: Fight the Future and 2008's The X-Files: I Want to Believe. The series and movies are streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
