Shudder has announced a new film that will be available to stream in October, and it comes to us from the producer of this year’s biggest horror hit, Obsession. Shudder also released an intriguing trailer for The Cycle, which you can watch at the end of this article.

The press release gives a very basic description of the plotline that reads: “When the body of a man missing for thirty-six years is discovered at the scene of a horrific crime, it’s up to his estranged daughter to unravel his dark past.”

That description sounds like it could apply to a thriller or police procedural film, but the trailer leans hard into horror territory, so let’s take a look at what we DO know about The Cycle.

·         James Harris and Michael Downey produced The Cycle, and Harris was also a producer for Obsession. Although it’s likely that nobody predicted the massive box office success that Obsession experienced, people were excited about it immediately following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and Focus Features bought the rights for a staggering $14 - $15 million. That set a record as the highest dollar purchase of a genre film in the history of TIFF (which will hold its 51st annual festival next month). Thus far, Obsession has grossed over $488 million worldwide. This means Harris knows what it takes to create a horror movie that people will respond to.

·         Director Jordan Downey also directed and wrote Stork, one of the installments in the anthology horror film V/H/S/Beyond, which debuted on Shudder in October of 2024.

·         The Cycle stars Deborah Ann Woll in the lead role, and she has some pretty solid genre credentials. She played the character of vampire Jessica on True Blood from 2008 – 2014, and appeared in Escape Room and Escape Room: Tournament of Champions in the role of Amanda Harper. She also played Karen Page in Daredevil, The Defenders, The Punisher, Daredevil: Born Again, and The Punisher: One Last Kill.

·         Jeffrey Donovan also appears in the film. While most of us know him from the popular tv series Burn Notice, Donovan has appeared in horror/thrillers such as Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, Extinction, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, Villains, and Wardriver.

When does The Cycle begin streaming on Shudder?

The Cycle will be part of Shudder’s Halloween lineup (always a good time), and will make its premiere on October 23.
