2026 is shaping into an excellent year for horror videogames. February has already displayed that, with Reanimal signifying Tarsier’s epic comeback, and Resident Evil: Requiem bringing Leon S. Kennedy back to Raccoon City. March will be closing out with a special release of South of Midnight for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2.
South of Midnight, a fantasy action game from Compulsion Games, was released on April 8, 2025 for Xbox Series X/S and PC. The game received particular praise towards its narrative and art style, as well as its exploration of Southern folklore.
This week, nearly a year since its initial release, South of Midnight is releasing its “Weaver Edition,” a package containing the original game and special features listed below

In the game, players take on the role of Hazel Flood, a teenager searching for her mother Lacey. When a terrible hurricane rips through their southern hometown of Prospero, their house is washed away during a flash flood, with Lacey still in it. In the aftermath of the storm, Hazel finds herself in a strikingly fantastic version of the American South in which she realizes her gift as a Weaver—a being who can magically render spirits and broken bonds.

It is played in third person, and features beautifully crafted stop-motion cutscenes that were constructed using clay maquettes. Much of the game’s physical setting was inspired by New Orleans and swampy regions of the Appalachian Mountains.
The award-winning game draws heavily from Southern tradition and culture

Hazel performs her abilities as a Weaver through patterns mimicking lacing (“weaving”). This showcase of embroidery is also present in one of Hazel’s outfits in the game.
The game features some intricately designed creatures, some of them include skeletal beings called Haints (an alternative pronunciation of “hate”) who, according to legend, chased their victims until they collapsed and died from exhaustion.
Throughout multiple points in the game, Hazel is assisted by a giant talking catfish. Catfish are the subject of multiple local southern legends, especially in relation to size. The tales surrounding these water creatures are sometimes treated to the same extent as those surrounding the mythical Loch Ness Monster.
Hazel comes across a gigantic alligator known as Two-Toed Tom, who grew to enormous size after consuming dozens of farm animals (after eating his cruel owner). Tom is based on a Florida/Alabama swamp legend that dates back to at least the 1920s about a livestock-hungry alligator who sometimes ate humans.
One of the game’s most integral aspects—bottle trees—is also prominent in southern culture. Hazel uses the bottles from the tree to trap negative energies. This was originally a Hoodoo practice from the ninth century.
The Weaver’s Edition of South of Midnight will be released for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 on March 31, 2026.
