Sydney Sweeney slated to star in Hollow, a reimagining of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Sydney Sweeney has been busy lately. Besides her movie career, including her performance in 2023's underrated Immaculate, she drew a lot of chatter lately for her performance as Cassie Howard in the latest season of Euphoria. More specifically, she's been in the headlines for Cassie's turn to sex work and OnlyFans. To put it mildly, Sweeney has some pretty raunchy scenes in the show's third season.

Controversy aside, Sweeney is slated to star in a reimagining of Legend of Sleepy Hollow called Hollow. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hollow will be a movie adaptation of Lindsey Anderson Beer's debut novel, which recently sold to Putnam and will be published in fall 2027. Anderson Beer has already worked within the horror genre and made her feature directorial debut with 2023's Pet Semetery: Bloodlines, a prequel.

The Hollywood Reporter also noted that Hollow is essentially a reimagining of the Washington Irving's early 19th Century short story. The original tale follows teacher Ichabod Crane, who competes with Brom Bones to draw the affection and attention of Katrina Van Tassel. Meanwhile, Ichabod has to confront the Headless Horseman. In the retelling, Sweeney would play Kartina Van Tassel, and in Anderson Beer's version, Katrina is the central figure.

Even though the novel hasn't even been published yet, the movie is moving forward rather quickly. LuckChap is going to produce, along with Anderson Beer for Beer Lab and Sweeney for the newly formed company Honey Trap. Meanwhile, Putman is an imprint of Penguin Random House, and the publisher acquired Hollow before the title could even go to auction, meaning they have a lot of faith in it. The film package will be shopped to interested studios very soon.

Additionally, The Hollywood Reporter stated that the book and film plan to combine the Gothic elements of Irving's initial tale with elements of an erotic thriller. It makes sense then that Sweeney was hired for the film version. She just starred alongside Amanda Syefried in last year's wildly popular The Housemaid, an adaptation of Freida McFadden's 2022 novel. A sequel, The Housemaid's Secret, is planned for release in 2027.

Meanwhile there have been several film and TV adaptations of Irving's iconic tale, as far back as the 1949 animated film The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, and of course, Tim Burton's 1999 movie Sleepy Hollow, starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci. That said, Hollow certainly sounds like a fresh take on the spooky tale.
