Take a dive into Shudder's Aquaphobia Collection this summer

Many of us have a seasonal tradition that involves watching movies about violent sea creatures during the summer. Sharks are the favorite, of course, but crocs, gators, octopi, or other aquatic critters are also appropriate. Shudder understands this summer obsession, so they have rolled out a new Aquaphobia collection.
While the list of movies about aquatic terrors is endless, let’s see what Shudder has in their collection.
Dangerous Animals – This Shudder Original film is fairly new, having released in 2025. Hassie Harrison is Zephyr, a free-spirited surfer who hooks up with nice guy Moses before taking off in the middle of the night. She ends up being abducted by a serial killer named Tucker, and taken out on his boat – his method is to take his victims out to sea before hoisting them over the water in a harness and allowing sharks to attack them.
Jai Courtney is both funny and terrifying as Tucker, and Dangerous Animals is a blast. It’s a great entry into the shark film genre.
Beast of War – This is another fantastic Shudder film that doesn’t get talked about enough. A group of young Australian soldiers during World War II are stranded at sea when their carrier explodes, trapped on a makeshift raft.
Of course, tensions are high, one of them has suffered a head injury that is causing him much confusion, and it gets even worse when a very large, very aggressive shark shows up. Beast of War manages to be funny at times, touching, and yes, tense, especially when night falls and the fog rolls in. Also, this mechanical shark is AWESOME.
Not all the films in Shudder's collection involve sharks
Sea Fever – “Solitary marine-biology student Siobhan endures a week on a ragged fishing trawler, miserably at odds with the close-knit crew. But out in the deep Atlantic, an unfathomable life-form soon ensnares the boat. As members of the crew now succumb to a strange infection, Siobhan must overcome her alienation and win their trust – before everyone is lost."
No Way Up – Part shark film and part survival thriller, the story for No Way Up gives us a storyline involving a plane that crashes into the Pacific Ocean. The handful of survivors are stuck in an air pocket as the plane sinks.
Their plans to escape or be rescued are hindered by a vicious shark, which not only attacks the survivors, but the people trying to save them as well.
The Last Breath – Most of the films in the Shudder collection involves sharks, and The Last Breath is not an exception. Some old college friends have a reunion, and decide to go on a very special scuba diving trip in the Caribbean. The excursion involves diving down to the wreckage of a battleship from World War II, where they can explore. But it all goes very wrong when they end up trapped in the rusty wreckage by great white sharks.
Great White – Five people fly a seaplane out to Hell’s Reef, where they find the body of a shark attack victim. When they find info on the victim’s cell phone, they decide to track the yacht he and his girlfriend were on, but uh-oh! The plane crashes, and they end up trapped together on a lifeboat.
You can probably guess what happens next. Yep, they end up surrounded by a school of sharks.
The Reef – Yet another group of friends sets out on a boat, hoping for fun in the sun. But they have to swim 12 miles to an island when their sail boat capsizes. One of them stays behind on the overturned boat, but he and the swimmers are menaced by a shark.
The Reef: Stalked – After the traumatic death of her sister Cath at the hands of her abusive husband, Nic is still grieving nine months later. She, her other sister Annie, and two other friends go kayaking.
Guess what happens? A shark – a shark happens.
Piranha – Let’s get away from sharks for a moment, and talk about another deadly fish, the man-eating piranha. In this beloved 1978 film, "thousands of military hybrid piranhas are accidently released into a river that a children's holiday camp uses."
Sharksploitation – Annnd…time to get back to sharks again, this time with an entertaining documentary about shark movies. The filmmakers pulled together clips from shark movies both good and bad, and assembled people who have worked on those movies to give us tons of information and behind-the-scenes peeks at what it takes to make them.
If you like shark movies, I urge you to watch this doc, I thoroughly enjoyed it and walked away with a list of films I hadn’t seen before.
Humanoids from the Deep – A money-hungry company plans to build a cannery near Noyo in California. When they begin to experiment by giving growth hormones to salmon, things go south in a hurry. The salmon escape to the ocean, where they are eaten by larger fish which began to mutate into humanoid creatures.
The creatures swim to the shore, where they sexually assault women and kill others.
Lake of Death – Lilian’s twin brother Luke died a year ago, and she is ready to try returning to her house, which is in the forest close to a lake. She brings some friends with her, and all of them begin to see and hear some pretty strange stuff.
Turns out that some of the locals think the lake itself has the power to drive people completely mad.
