The original Halloween trilogy is headed back to the big screen this month

Now that the calendar has flipped over to September, it's just about time to celebrate spooky season. And what better way to do that than to watch Michael Myers slash and hack victims on the big screen?

John Carpenter's Halloween, Halloween II, and Halloween III: Season of the Witch are returning to movie theaters this week at AMC Theatres. More specifically, the films will screen from September 4-September 6, and the screenings are presented in conjunction with Halloween: The Game.

While it's not uncommon for the first movie to return to movie theaters in either September or October, it's rare for the first three movies to play in tandem with each other, especially Halloween III: Season of the Witch, which was initially the black sheep of the franchise, since it doesn't feature Michael Myers. However, in recent years, it's developed an increasing cult following.

The first movie was released in 1978 and stars Jamie Lee Curtis in her first major film role as the bookish final girl Laurie Strode. She faces off against Michael Myers after he breaks out of a mental institute and returns to his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, where he killed his sister, Judith Myers, in 1963. The movie also stars Donald Pleasance as Michael's psychiatrist, Dr. Loomis. Both Curtis and Pleasance would resume their roles for several sequels. Pleasance passed away in 1995, and his final appearance in the franchise was the sixth movie, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, which also featured Paul Rudd in his first role as Tommy Doyle, who was a child in the initial movie.

Carpenter did not return to direct Halloween II. Instead, that job went to Rick Rosenthal. Carpenter did, however, write the screenplay, and to this day, he claims he wrote it while drunk. In the second movie, Laurie is mostly sidelined in a hospital, but Michael eventually finds her. Released in 1981, when the 80s slasher craze was in full swing, the movie is much more violent than the initial film, but it had to match the times and the fact other slashers showed more blood and guts.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch is a much different film and features an evil corporation, Silver Shamrock, that hatches a plan to murder millions of children using microchipped Halloween masks and a television broadcast. The movie stars horror icon Tom Atkins as Dr. Daniel Challis, who tries to thwart the corporation's plans before it's too late. This is the film that's especially rare to see on the big screen.

The third Halloween film was initially panned upon release because of Michael's absence, but over the years, it's developed a loyal fanbase. However, Michael would return for the next sequel, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers.
