The Yogurt Shop Murders was released on HBO Max in August 2025, detailing the tragic quadruple homicide that occurred at the I Can’t Believe It’s Yogurt! shop in Austin, Texas in 1991. Despite a lengthy—and controversial—investigation, the case remained unsolved at the time the series premiered.
One month after it aired, the perpetrator was finally revealed through updated DNA analysis.
Now, aligning with a great documentary trend for 2026, HBO Max will debut a fifth episode of the series as a conclusion, detailing the revelation and its ramifications on family, friends, and investigators. Titled The End of Wondering, it will premiere on May 22nd.
The 1991 murders occurred after closing time at the store. 17-year-old employees Jennifer Harbison and Eliza Thomas were the closing crew, and Jennifer’s 15-year-old sister Sarah and her 13-year-old acquaintance Amy Ayers were waiting inside to catch a ride home with Jennifer. Around midnight, a police officer noticed a fire at the establishment and called it in. The first responders made the grizzly discovery of the burnt teenagers, who had all been shot execution-style, as well as evidence of sexual assault on three of them.
According to the Austin Police Department (APD), at least 50 individuals had confessed to the incident, including a local serial killer (on the day of his execution for unrelated murders). Authorities initially focused on two teenagers, Robert Springsteen and Michael Scott, but stopped investigating them after the information they provided proved inconsequential.

However, years later when the young men were in their 20s, a new lead investigator reexamined the case and named them as suspects again. Through separate, controversial trials, the juries convicted them for the murders, based largely on a false confession from Springsteen. But the Texas appeals court overturned both convictions in 2008. After their release from prison, prosecution did not go through with a retrial after DNA testing did not match either man. It was determined by experts that the confession was coerced.
On September 26, 2025, the APD held a press conference where they revealed they matched DNA evidence obtained from three of the victims to that belonging to Robert Eugene Bashers, a serial killer who committed suicide eight years after the heinous murders.
The Yogurt Shop Murders, which was produced by A24, featured interviews from investigators, authors, lawyers, and family/friends of the victims. Award-winning filmmaker Margaret Brown directed the series and was so affected by the case that she geared the project towards memorializing the teenage victims rather than a traditional true crime investigation. The aspects of the case also troubled the crew so deeply that A24 paid for mental counseling for them.
“The End of Wondering” will premiere May 22nd on HBO Max. In the meantime, the original four episodes of The Yogurt Shop Murders are available to stream on the service.
