True Crime: Hulu docuseries examines a murder case inspired by the movie Scream

Hulu is adding a new docuseries to its true crime catalogue, and it’s a case with a horror movie tie-in. The crime in question took place in Idaho in 2006, with the victim being a 16-year-old high school student named Cassie Jo Stoddart.

On the night of September 22, Cassie was pet sitting for her Aunt and Uncle’s two dogs, and had invited her boyfriend Matt Beckham over to watch a movie, and the two of them also invited their friends Brian Lee Draper and Torey Michael Adamcik over. All four teens were students at the same high school.

When Draper and Adamcik showed up, Cassie gave them a tour of her Aunt and Uncle’s home, including the basement, then the four friends settled in to watch Kill Bill. Before the movie was over, Draper and Adamcik left, claiming they were going to the movies.

Unbeknownst to Cassie and Beckham, their friends had left the basement door unlocked so they could sneak back in and initiate the horrible plan they had put into place. Once they had returned to the basement wearing dark clothes, gloves and masks, they made loud noises, hoping to lure the couple down the stairs, where their intention was to murder them.

When that didn’t work, they flipped some of the electrical breakers in the basement, hoping that might make them come down to check out the electrical box. Still, Stoddart and Beckham did not take the bait, so they turned part of the lights back on.

Cassie was scared at this point, and her boyfriend called his mom to see if he could stay the night, but she said no, offering instead for Cassie to come to their house, which she did not do. Beckham left to go home, and the two killers went upstairs and viciously attacked Cassie.

How could two 16-year-olds be capable of committing such a violent true crime?

Cassie was stabbed around 30 times, and at least 12 of the stab wounds were fatal. Eventually, Draper and Adamcik were caught and charged with the murder, and unfortunately for them, they left plenty of evidence in the form of documentary-style videotapes. In the tapes, they spoke of their plan to not only murder their friend, but to follow that up by committing a school shooting. They claimed to have been inspired by their love of the movie Scream, and by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who were responsible for the Columbine High School massacre.

The Scream Murder: A True Teen Horror Story will premiere on Hulu and Disney+ Wednesday, February 11 at 9:02 pm ET as a three-part series.
