Violent Night 2 trailer unleashes holiday mayhem and carnage

Though there's still plenty of summer left yet, Universal just released the first poster and trailer for Violent Night 2, which will have a wide theatrical release on December 4.

Judging from the trailer, it looks like the sequel takes place not long after the first movie, which released in 2022. It finds Santa working at a mall because he lost his powers after ending up on the naughty list for killing a number of people in the first film. Yet, despite the issue that Santa (David Harbour) no longer has his magical powers, he still finds himself going toe-to-toe with a bunch of bad guys, only this time, in the mall instead of a house. Oh, and he's joined by Mrs. Clause (Kristen Bell!)

The beginning of the trailer features Harbor's voiceover, stating, "On Christmas, I deliver presents to nice little boys and girls. If you're naughty, I deliver something else, justice." The trailer then cuts to Santa taking someone out with an axe, teasing that this sequel just may be as bloody and violent as its predecessor.

Additionally, the Violent Night 2 trailer makes clear that the sequel will have some laughs, like the initial film. For instance, there's a scene where Santa tells little kids in the mall that there may not be a Christmas this year. When the kids ask why, he tells them because Santa got put on the naughty list, though he won't say why. The trailer then cuts to his blood-soaked vengeance and kills.

Here's what else we learned from the Violent Night 2 trailer

Besides the points already mentioned above, the Violent Night 2 trailer also provides some other hints about the sequel's plot. For instance, because Santa is on the naughty list, is it possible that someone hacked his machinery and apps? How can Santa end up on the naughty list? Doesn't he control the list? That said, maybe the magic and spirit of Christmas simply added him to the list, because of his misdeeds. We do know that he takes it upon himself to save Christmas as a means to improve his standing and return to the nice list.

It'll also be interesting to see how the film makes uses the mall; other than the fact Santa now works there. The trailer shows a few cool action scenes and likely deaths that occur within the mall, but how else will the film utilize the setting? After all, malls are very, very busy during the holidays, and it could be fun to see a few shoppers witness Santa's sense of justice and revenge. Simply put, the mall is a great location for the sequel, and it'll be interesting to see how they use it.

However, what's not clear is why Jared Harris' villain character, Mason, and his group of thugs want to eliminate Santa. Perhaps this will be a totally new plot, or it could loop back to the events of the first movie, when Santa protected a family by disposing of criminals trying to commit a heist and rob the family of hundreds of millions. We'll just have to see.
