Fresh off of her Oscar win as Aunt Gladys in Weapons, Amy Madigan has signed on for another major project. She's joining the cast of writer/director Ryan Coogler's reboot of The X-Files for Hulu.

Madigan isn't the only X-Files reboot casting news from this week. Deadline reported that Coogler has cast several others in guest roles, including Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, Devery Jacobs, Lochlyn Munro, Tantoo Cardinal, Joel D. Montgrand, and Sofia Grace Clifton. It's unclear how large any of these roles will be or which characters the actors will play.

Himesh Patel (The Franchise, Yesterday, Station Eleven) and Danielle Deadwyler (Rooster, Till, 40 Acres, Station Eleven) have already been cast as the lead FBI agents in The X-Files reboot. However, they're not replacing Mulder and Scully. They'll each play completely new characters.

There's still no word yet if Gillian Anderson or David Duchovny will return and reprise their iconic roles. However, Anderson at least has left the door open and confirmed in March that she's been in talks with Coogler about the pilot. Deadline also reported that she teased the pilot at Awesome Con, while also confirming that she's read the script. She said of Coogler, "He's such a cool guy and so talented." She added that the pilot's script is "really good," and she encouraged fans to give the reboot a chance.

Meanwhile, prior to her role as Aunt Gladys, Madigan has starred in several other films, including American Woman, Antlers, Pollock, Gone Baby Gone, Field of Dreams, Uncle Buck, Places in the Heart, and Streets of Fire. She received her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the movie Twice in a Lifetime.

Like Madigan, Buscemi has an extensive resume, with roles in Fargo, Ghost World, and Reservoir Dogs, as well as HBO's Boardwalk Empire as Nucky Thompson. More recently, he starred in Season 2 of Netflix's hit series Wednesday. He'll next star alongside John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell in the feature film Wild Horses Nine, directed by Martin McDonagah.

Jennifer Yale (The Copenhagen Test) has been tapped as the showrunner for The X-Files reboot. Series creator Chris Carter will be involved in a non-writing role as a producer. Cooger hasn't commented upon the reboot all that much yet, but in a podcast appearance last April, he said he's eager to work on the reboot and "fired up to get back to it." He teased that some of the episodes will be scary and added, "We're gonna try to make something really great and make something for the real X-Files' fans and maybe find some new ones."

Further, Coogler has confirmed that the reboot will follow the initial series' structure of monster-of-the-week episodes and mythology episodes. The mythology episodes focused on a larger government conspiracy regarding the existence of extraterrestrial life and an actual alien invasion, which played out more extensively in the first movie, The X-Files: Fight the Future, as well as all 11 seasons.
