Blumhouse is reportedly planning a Puppet Master reboot

Everyone's favorite killer dolls and one of horror's longest-running franchises may be getting a reboot from Blumhouse.

According to a quote that's been circulating online over the last few days from Charles Band's new book, Horror Puppet, Blumhouse secured an option to reboot Puppet Master and potentially do more beyond a single film, including a TV series.

The quote was first circulated by Brain Mutant and reads:

"We finally closed a deal with Blumhouse, the biggest name in what's left of the horror world. It was a lucrative option deal for them to make a big reboot of Puppet Master. A movie, yes, and possibly a series as well. Best of all, I get to hold onto all of my Puppet Master stuff, the movies and the merch. Honesty I can't wait to see what they come up with."

The Puppet Master series, which is now 15 movies deep and still going, really helped to build Band's company Full Moon Features. The initial film, released in 1989, made a name for itself, in part, because of its impressive stop-motion animation and murderous puppets, like Blade, Pinhead, Leech Woman, and Tunneler. That initial film also had some horror heavyweights behind it, including Barbara Crampton and a memorable performance by Guy Rolfe as the puppets' creator, Andre Toulon. The franchise would add some other favorites in future installments, including Six Shooter. During the many sequels, the series deepened the lore, which also has to deal with Nazis and the fact that Andre Toulon was an anti-fascist puppeteer who used his art to critique Hitler. Some of the sequels actually framed the puppets as the good guys.

There was already one reboot of Puppet Master. Released in 2018 by Cinestate, Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich actually upended much of the initial lore and cast the puppets as Nazis. Meanwhile, Full Moon continues to release new Puppet Master movies and merchandise, and the most famous puppet, Blade, had his own solo movie, Blade: The Iron Cross in 2020. There's also supposed to be a solo Leech Woman movie.

Band's new book is available on Full Moon's website. Beyond Puppet Master, his company launched some other notable B movies, including Evil Bong, Dolls, and Gingerdead Man. These also had several sequels.

There's no word yet on what Blumhouse will do regarding Puppet Master, or who would write and direct a reboot, but we'll report that news as we have it. Hopefully, Blumhouse commits to using practical effects for a reboot, which is what made those initial movies so beloved in the first place.
