Blumhouse just dropped a trailer for Other Mommy, and everyone is talking about it

If you saw The Odyssey last weekend, you were probably blown away by the trailer for a Blumhouse horror movie called Other Mommy. At that time, this was the only way you could see the trailer, because it was not yet up on YouTube.

Well, that has now changed, and anyone can now see that super-creepy trailer. Other Mommy is based on the book Incidents Around the House, which was written by Josh Malerman. Malerman also wrote Bird Box, which was adapted as a hit film for Netflix in 2018.

Taking on the director duties for Other Mommy is Rob Savage, who has always been an innovator where horror movies are concerned. He was responsible for Shudder's Host (as writer, director, and producer), which was filmed and released during the COVID crisis; it was filmed entirely through Zoom, with Savage directing his actors remotely. At a spare 56-minute run time, Host managed to be genuinely scary while using all practical effects which were implemented by the actors. It was brilliant, and remains one of my personal favorite Shudder originals.

Later, Savage would write and direct the polarizing Dashcam before directing The Boogeyman. It feels like he is a good fit for Other Mommy.

Now, on to the cast. First and foremost, the great Jessica Chastain does double duty, portraying both Ursula (the “real” mom) and the terrifying Other Mommy. I am up for seeing any film that includes Chastain as a cast member; she was a great, fierce protector of the two little girls in Mama, and a chilling villain in Crimson Peak. Her performance is mostly what makes the trailer for Other Mommy so terrifying.

Jay Duplass is Russ, Ursula’s husband and the father of little Bela, and you probably recognize his last name. He and his brother Mark are responsible for Creep, which has become a true cult favorite among horror fans.

Arabella Olivia Clark is Bela, and the film also features Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed, Karen Allen, and Sean Kaufman.

Judging by the very effective trailer, Other Mommy gives much scarier Coraline vibes. The trope of a mom who suddenly appears to be different was explored in that animated film, as well as in Goodnight Mommy, and what would be more terrifying for a child?

When does Other Mommy premiere on the big screen?

You can see the trailer at the end of this article, and you can see Other Mommy in theatres as of October 9. It might just be THE film everyone is discussing this Halloween season.
