Director Emma Tammi returned to direct the sequel, while video game developer Scott Cawthon again penned the script. The sequel stars returning cast members Josh Hutcherson as Mike, Piper Rubio as Abby, Elizbeth Lail as Vanessa, and Matthew Lillard as William. Lillard is joined by his Scream co-star Skeet Ulrich, who plays the former business partner of Lillard's character, which seems fitting, considering their roles in Scream. Other new cast members include McKenna Grace, Wayne Knight, and Teo Briones, along with a brand-new animatronics voiced by Megan Fox, Matthew Patrick, and Kellen Goff.
The sequel occurs one year after the supernatural nightmare transpired at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. When Mike and his sister Abby sneak out to find their animatronic friends, terrifying events begin to unfold. They learn dark and terrifying secrets about the true origins of Freddy, unleashing even more horrors.
Despite the sequel's current rating of 16 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, that hasn't stopped fans from filling theaters. The first film also suffered from poor critic reviews, with a current rating of 33 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, the movie was a major box office success, grossing nearly $300 million globally, making it the highest grossing horror movie of 2023. Though both films suffered poor critic ratings, they had a built-in fanbase as a beloved video game property, and they served as gateway horror movies for a lot of younger fans.
