This article contains major spoilers for From's Season 4 finale.
From's fourth season concluded last weekend. While the season as a whole gave viewers a few more answers and a bit of hope regarding the possibility the residents will finally escape, it also saw some major causalities with the brutal death of Mari (Kaelen Ohm) at the hands of the monster Smiley (Jamie McGuire) and the death of Elgin (Nathan D. Simmons), who was murdered by the Man in Yellow in the form of Sophia (Julia Doyle).
The finale also raised even more questions that will need to be answered in the fifth and final season. Let's unpack some major events from the finale, as well as questions and possible theories about the final season.
What is Fatima's fate following her transformation, and will she turn on the residents or protect them?
Fatima had a fairly devastating storyline throughout Season 4. After she was forced to birth a monster at the end of Season 3, she lived with the repressions of that in this most recent season, including PTSD and major changes to her body that resulted in black veins and a heart rate that essentially stated she's no longer among the living. After she unknowingly drank the Man in Yellow's (Douglas E. Hughes) blood, the transformation quickened.
In the final minutes of Season 4, she fully transitions into a monster, but she does so to save Boyd (Harold Perrineau), her husband Ellis (Corteon Moore), Tabitha (Catalina Sandino Moreno), and Jade (David Alpy) from monsters in the tunnel. She delivers the tear-jerking line, "Remember who I was." It's a heartbreaking moment and signals her humanity may be gone.
However, there's also the real possibility that instead of becoming an evil creature, she'll somehow be able to protect her friends by controlling or scaring the monsters. Earlier in the season, Fatima built a golem out of mud. In mythology, a golem is a creature that protects. So far, the golem hasn't come to life, but perhaps Fatima is the golem and the one who will protect the group. Additionally, earlier in the season, she controlled Smiley and stopped him from killing Kenny (Ricky He).
Either way, Fatima will likely have a major role to play in the final season. Let's hope that her transformation serves as a form of protection. Imagine how devastating it would be for Ellis and the others to confront her as a monster.
What's the long-term impact of uprooting the bottle tree?
After Boyd and a few other residents uprooted the bottle tree to help Jade and Tabitha escape from the tunnels, it unleashed some gnarly effects. Suddenly, it turned to night. Bolts of lightning shot from the sky, coinciding with earthquakes. Meanwhile, in the final scene, Sophia told the Boy in White (Vox Smith) that the group no longer has the bottle tree. In the previous episode, he warned Victor (Scott McCord) against uprooting the tree.
It's still unclear the purpose of the bottle tree, but now we know that removing it has major negative consequences. Perhaps it served as a form of protection. We don't quite know, but uprooting it awakened angry forces.
What does the group now do with the bones of the children?
The fact that Jade and Tabitha did discover and recover the bones of the sacrificed children in the tunnels is a major victory. That said, it's only one piece of a much larger puzzle. It's still unclear what the residents need to do with the bones and how they'll eventually get home. Still, it's a victory for the survivors and one step forward in their return home.
Most likely, the children are going to need a proper rest and burial. Throughout the series, we learned how the children were sacrificed, and Jade and Tabitha continually saw their restless spirits. Now that they're recovered the bones, hopefully they can lay them to rest.
What game are the Boy in White and Man in Yellow Playing?
Throughout the series, it wasn't quite clear if the Boy in White was actually a helpful spirit. He constantly speaks in cryptic messages, but now that Season 4 is over, it's evident that he wants to help the residents. He was right in warning Victor about removing the bottle tree and based upon his interaction with the Man in Yellow/Sophia, we know that he's rooting for the residents to find a way home.
Yet, what's unclear thus far is how he knows the Man in Yellow and what game they're playing. Their interaction made it seem like the residents are pawns in a much larger game. Additionally, it's fair to read the Boy in White as an angel or some force for good and the Man in Yellow as evil personified and/or a demon. Which side is going to win? Are the two gambling over the souls of the residents? At the very least, we know now that the Boy in White is indeed a force for good and a spiritual guide for the residents. Maybe now they'll start listening to him more.
Overall, Season 4 gave viewers a few more answers to the larger mystery, but it also raised several more questions and left the fate of some characters, specifically Fatima, dangling. We'll have to wait a while until Season 5, but let's enjoy the downtime since next season is the last.
