This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of From titled "Best Laid Plans."
Sometimes, no matter how good a plan seems, it doesn't always work out the way that we'd like. That's essentially what happens in "Best Laid Plans." The episode also rushes towards a high-octane conclusion and cliffhanger that leaves the residents to fend against the monsters.
Let's recap and review the latest episode of From.
Boyd and company launch their plan to finally get home
Though Boyd (Harold Perrineau) was initially skeptical of Jade's (David Alpay) plan to go into the tunnels under the Colony House and find the bones of the resurrected children, he agreed to do so by the last episode. At the beginning of "Best Laid Plans," he starts to put the pieces in motion to enact the plan and ensure there are as few causalities as possible. Essentially, Boyd believes that the totem Tabitha (Catalina Sandino Moreno) used to kill one of the dolls a few episodes ago can be used to stop the nighttime creatures. If Boyd can kill enough of them, then it'll make it safer for a group of survivors to head into the tunnels and find the children's bones. The creatures hide in the tunnels during the day, so, on paper, Boyd's plan does make sense. He and Jade also map out every potential escape path and entrance to the tunnels.
However, the plan doesn't work out the way Boyd had hoped. Because of Boyd's Parkinson's Disease, Kenny (Ricky He) volunteers to kill the monsters instead of Boyd. While this also makes sense initially, Kenny soon realizes that the totem doesn't work on the monsters, for whatever reason. After Kenny stabs one of them, the creature pretends it affects him and then says, "Just kidding." It's one of the most nail-biting sequences of the season.
After that, the monsters chase Kenny to the abandoned bus, surrounding him and nearly murdering him, until Fatima (Pegah Ghafoori) feels a strange connection with the monster she birthed, which confronts Kenny atop of the bus. For whatever reason, Fatima causes the monster to retract its fangs, giving Kenny the chance to push it out of the way and find safely. Thank goodness fan favorite Kenny wasn't killed.
Whatever Fatima experienced regarding her connection with the monster will likely play out in the season's last few episodes. It'd also be nice if she's given more to do, since she spent most of the season locked in a bedroom, building a golem out of mud.
The survivors learn that maybe reincarnation is possible
Boyd also breaks the news that Tabitha was apparently Miranda, Victor's (Scott McCord) mom, in a past life and time and time again, she's called back to the town to save the sacrificed children but continually fails. Oddly, most of the townspeople react fairly well to the news, but considering all they've seen and witnessed, reincarnation doesn't seem all that strange. Victor's dad, Henry (Robert Joy), turns to the bottle yet again and dismisses the news.
Speaking of Henry, because he drank the Man in Yellow/Sophia's (Julia Doyle) blood without knowing it during the last episode, he starts to hallucinate that he's in the hospital and maybe this is all a dream. Likely, he's going to act on that notion one way or another in the season's final few episodes. My guess is this will have some dire consequences. We'll see.
The group gets closer to unraveling the Man in Yellow's identity
Victor realizes that for everyone to finally get home safely, they need to confront and stop the Man in Yellow (Douglas E. Hughes). This leads him to find the Man in Yellow's car from the 1970s, when he first arrived in the town. Victor discovers a bag of teeth in the car's glove compartment, causing Ethan and Tabitha to recoil, and rightfully so.
Early in the episode, Boyd brings up the message written in blood from earlier in the season that "knowledge has a cost." Because the group is getting closer to finally unearthing some answers, the Man in Yellow is likely to hit back harder. For instance, as Sophia, he resurrects Roger (Eugene Sampang) and has him attack the Colony House, again thwarting Boyd's plan regarding the tunnels. It's likely that with only a few episodes left in the season, the Man in Yellow will do whatever he can to stop the group, especially once the residents discover his true identity.
Final verdict
A few episodes this season have felt a bit sluggish, but that wasn't the case with "Best Laid Plans." The monsters returned to pose a serious threat, nearly killing Kenny in the process. Sophia resurrected Roger, whose lips and eyes have been sewn shut like a doll, and Henry is on the brink of snapping at any moment. It was also nice to see other characters, including Fatima and Kenny, have a bit of the spotlight again.
"Best Laid Plans" barrels towards a nerve-jangling conclusion that'll play out in the next episode. Meanwhile, Boyd needs to figure out a better plan regarding the tunnels if the residents have any hope of returning home.
