From: Season 4: Episode 8: Heavy Is the Head (recap and review)

There are only two episodes left of From: Season 4, and in the latest episode, the stakes have been set for what's likely to be an explosive season finale, with some potential deaths. In "Heavy Is the Head," Boyd (Harold Perrineau) struggles with the decision of putting anyone else in harm's way, even if it means finding a way home. Fatima (Pegah Ghafoori) has a major bodily change that makes her future feel ominous at best, and the Man in Yellow (Douglas E. Hughes) confronts Tabitha (Catalina Sandino Moreno).

Let's unpack the newest episode.

Boyd struggles with his health and with leadership

"Heavy Is the Head" is an apt episode title for the major challenges that Boyd faces as the community's leader. He frets over sending anyone into the tunnels under the Colony House because he fears it'll get them killed by the monsters that live there in the daytime and protect the bones of the sacrificed children. Even when Jade (David Alpay) offers a potentially safer plan that involves uprooting the bottle tree to create an escape path, Boyd still shoots down the idea. By the end of the episode, however, he realizes that if anyone is ever going to get home, more deaths may occur. The residents need to make a stand and act, or else they'll remain trapped and picked off one by one.

Additionally, Boyd's mental and physical health continues to worsen. He even asks Kristi (Chloe Van Landschoot) for a pill to suppress the hallucinations he keeps having, including sounds of a gunshot, but unfortunately, she can't offer him anything. With the season winding down, and Boyd's mental and physical health deteriorating, it's clear that the group is simply running out of time. Yet, they're closer than ever before of returning home. Hopefully, Boyd can hold it together long enough.

Fatima faces an uncertain future

The repercussions from Fatima birthing a monster last season continue to play out. In this recent episode, it's revealed that black veins have formed over her lower stomach. In the previous episode, she realized that she has a connection with the monster she birthed, which is what stopped it from killing Kenny (Ricky He). Because of this, Mari (Kaelen Ohm) believes that they can use Fatima's connection as a weapon. This puts Mari at odds with Kristi, even though Fatima wants to assist the group anyway that she can.

Near the end of the episode, Kristi reveals to Mari that Fatima's heart rate and blood pressure are abnormal. Is Fatima becoming a monster? Whatever is happening to her has dangerous effects on her health, beyond the creepy black veins. It's possible that, like Boyd, Fatima is also running out of time, yet maybe her connection to the monster is another weapon the residents can use as they prepare to make their stand.

Henry continues to have delusions, and Tabitha meets the Man in Yellow

A few episodes ago, Henry (Robert Joy) drank the Man in Yellow's blood, without knowing it. Since then, he's had delusions that he's in a hospital bed and everything he sees in Fromville is an illusion. In the new episode, this takes an extremely dangerous turn when one of the nurses in Henry's mind tells him that to return home, he needs to severe the anchor. Henry wakes up and returns to the town before the nurse tells him anything else. Most likely, the anchor is his son Victor (Scott McCord). How devastating would it be if Henry tries to kill his own son?

Meanwhile, in the episode's last minutes, the Man in Yellow confronts Tabitha near the RV where she and her family initially crashed in the first season and ended up stuck in the town. He warns her that by unearthing the children's bones, the residents could potentially go home or unleash unspeakable evil. This leaves Tabitha rattled and will likely throw yet another wrench into Jade's plan to go into the tunnels. The Man in Yellow is probably lying and trying to prevent the group from finding the bones, but Tabitha may try to stop the group from entering the tunnels.

Final verdict

Overall, "Heavy is the Head" largely serves to set up the season's final two episodes, while upping the ante. There are now several other complications the group will have to deal with, including the changes to Fatima's body, the Man in Yellow's warning, Henry's potential actions, and Boyd's shaky mental and physical state. The episode was a slow burn compared to last week's, but it set more pieces in motion and underscored that if the group is ever going to return home, it won't be easy.

Joy again turned in a strong performance, as did Perrineau. The episode also concluded on yet another cliffhanger that'll likely tie into the finale and what the group decides to do about the tunnels and the bones. Further, it's nice to see more attention given to Fatima over the last two episodes. She's likely to play a major role in what remains of the season.
