From Season 4: Episode 6: The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (recap and review)

This article contains major spoilers for From's latest episode, "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter."

After a mid-season break, From resumed this week and had a heck of an episode with "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter." It seems like the survivors may finally have some answers, or at least a pathway to some answers about what may save them and return them home. And it's all thanks to Jade's (David Alpay) mushroom trip during the previous episode when he realized tunnels exist under the Colony House and it may be a way to lay to rest the bones of the sacrificed children.

Additionally, "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter" gave viewers heart palpitations over Donna's (Elizabeth Saunders) fate, after she had a heart attack, and the episode revealed an eerie new detail about nightmares and the forest, which caused Donna's heart attack in the first place.

Let's recap and review the latest episode.

Jade wasn't wrong about what he saw while tripping

At the beginning of the episode, Jade and Boyd (Harold Perrineau) argue about what Jade saw in the previous episode, while he was tripping, specifically a secret door in the Colony House, leading to a set of tunnels and thus, the bones of sacrificed children, guarded by the monsters in the daytime. Rightfully so, Boyd is leery of leading a team down there and potentially risking causalities when they've already had so much death.

However, by the end of the episode, Boyd takes a sledgehammer to a brick wall and discovers that there is indeed a secret door. Jade was right. Considering we're now halfway through Season 4 and next season will be the last, it seems like the tunnels and the sacrificed children are indeed part of the solution to get the survivors back home. Hopefully, the writers are pushing us towards the conclusion and solving some of the mysteries that remain from Season 1, namely why everyone is trapped in the town and how to get them out.

A major character has a scary brush with death, and nightmares linger in the forest

In a major reveal, we learn that after people die in the town, their nightmares live in the forest. It explains the gnarly killer dolls from the previous episode. They scared a resident who died and then came out of the lake to kill. That adds another horrifying layer to From, and it's likely by the season's conclusion, additional nightmares will attack the residents.

It's such a shocking revelation that it causes Donna to have a heart attack because she dreads that such a reveal will be too much for the townspeople to take, after they've already lost so much and already have to dread monsters that come out at night and won't allow them to leave their home once the sun sets.

Initially, it seemed like Donna would die. She spends much of the episode on a bed, hooked up to a monitor, with a weak pulse. Boyd, meanwhile, has a heart to heart with her and confesses, while she's unconscious, that because of her, he survived his first night in the town. Once again, Perrineau gives a heck of a performance, while underscoring how much Donna means to his character. He simply can't lose her because she's one aspect keeping him from his breaking point. Because Donna already had a heart attack, I'm doubtful that she's on the chopping block at any point for the remainder of the season. It would feel too cheap after nearly killing her off during this most recent episode. Other characters, however...

Henry and Sophia booze it up and have a chat

Since Donna survived a heart attack, I'm guessing that she's safe but other characters are not. More specifically, I'm concerned about Victor's (Scott McCord) dad, Henry (Robert Joy). After learning during the last episode that the Man in Yellow (Douglas E. Hughes) killed and ate his wife, he encounters the Man in Yellow in the form of Sophia (Julia Doyle). However, because the MIY is disguised as Sophia, Henry doesn't know who he is. Sophia and Henry have several drinks together, and Sophia pretends to comfort him.

However, hear the end of the episode, she purposefully cuts her hand on glass and drips some of the blood into Henry's drink. Unfortunately, he downs it all. The episode ends before we know the consequences of this, but they won't be good. Perhaps the blood will infect Henry, causing him to turn on others, including his son Victor, or maybe it'll kill him or cause him to kill himself, since he's already so heartbroken regarding the revelations about his wife. It's quite a cliffhanger regarding Henry's fate.

Final verdict and review

Overall, "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" was worth the wait after a midseason break. The episode had compelling performances by Perrineau and Saunders especially. It put Henry face to face with the Man in Yellow, without him actually knowing it, and the episode opened the possibility that the tunnels are the answer to discovering the bones of the sacrificed children and ultimately freeing the trapped survivors.

Additionally, despite the horrors, the episode included some real human moments, including Boyd's speech to Donna, but also a heartwarming scene between Julie (Hannah Cheramy) and Sara (Avery Konrad). There's a lot of story and character development potential there, if Julie and Sara form an actual friendship. Even the hardened Randall (A.J. Simmons) is showing flashes of kindness, and his character is really undergoing an evolution, especially compared to his introduction.

With only a few episodes left, Season 4 of From is picking up the pace and setting plans in motion towards the eventual finale. Time is indeed running out, but at least the survivors may have found a way out. It's unclear, though, what dangers still await them, not only from the Man in Yellow, but also in those tunnels.
