Slow burn slasher in the wilderness film In a Violent Nature was somewhat polarizing amongst horror fans when it was released in 2024. After its debut as part of the Midnight section at Sundance, it was acquired by IFC Films, and eventually went on to stream on Shudder.
In a Violent Nature was not a face-paced horror movie, which put a lot of people off. Large sections of the film consisted of the masked killer (known as Johnny) just walking through the woods – thus the “nature” part of its title. But, it sported a high volume of gore, and people are still talking about that “yoga kill” scene. It was pretty impressive, and featured Johnny jamming a hook through a young woman’s torso, then hooking her head and pulling it through the center of her body. Pretty gnarly!
The film’s killer was given a sad backstory, with Johnny being portrayed as developmentally challenged. When Johnny was accidently killed in a prank gone wrong, his father found the people involved and confronted them, which led to his death. Johnny returned as a sort of vengeful spirit, held in place by a locket.
After a group of friends discover and take the locket, Johnny is freed to commence with the killin.’ And kill he does, tracking down the locket stealers are murdering them in violent and clever ways.

Regardless of how some felt about it personally, In a Violent Nature released theatrically on 1,426 screens, was IFC Film’s widest release in theatres, and it grossed over $3 million during its opening week. It was also well-received by critics, with Variety ranking it as the best horror film of the year as of June 20, 2024.
A month later, an announcement was made at Comic-Con: In a Violent Nature would be receiving a sequel, and now it has been announced that the sequel is officially in post-production.
According to information given to Variety, “In the second film, Johnny heads to a summer camp, where he crosses paths with a young, outcast camper who is forced to spend the night with his counselor sister and her friends at their annual end-of-season party.”
Ry Barrett is returning to the role of Johnny, and is joined by Lucas Nguyen, Olivia Scriven, Laurie Babin, Fionn Laird, Evan Marsh, and Donald MacLean, Jr.
The filmmakers have promised that there are several kills on par with the gruesome yoga scene.
