ID (Investigation Discovery) has announced that its true crime series TOXIC will return for a new season in September. The series, which is led by Elizabeth Chambers, dives into dysfunctional relationships and the often traumatic aftermath that comes from them.
Chambers is both an investigative journalist and an advocate for survivors of these dark, dangerous relationships. The new episodes will “unpack the warning signs and impact of toxic love, spotlighting the raw and real stories of those affected by destructive relationship dynamics.”
In TOXIC, Chambers talks to those who have survived domestic abuse and violence, along with their trusted family members and friends. She strives to stress that “toxic love” can easily turn deadly and extremely dangerous.
In the season premiere, which is titled Don’t Go Home, Chambers has a conversation with Jenn Holman about her disastrous relationship with local bad boy Jesse Winnick. While their relationship was tumultuous from the start, she never foresaw how deadly it would later become. Despite the fact that everyone in her life was encouraging her to walk away from Jesse, she stuck it out – until she could no longer do so.
Their toxic love affair ended in unspeakable violence, leaving nothing but trauma in its wake.
TOXIC will dive into the tragic story of Yeardley Love and her abusive boyfriend
Throughout the remainder of the season, TOXIC will explore the story a preacher in the Independent Fundamentalist Baptist Church organization, a young woman who marries a man more than twice her age who subjects her to unbelievable violation, and the murder of 22-year-old Yeardley Love.
Love was a University of Virginia student who was a member of the University’s lacrosse team. In her freshman year, she met George Wesley Huguely, who was a midfielder for the men’s lacrosse team. The two were involved in a romantic relationship for two years, but it was on and off because of his often aggressive behavior. Apparently, alcohol amped up that aggression.
On May 3 of 2010, Love’s roommate called 911, claiming that Love was suffering from alcohol poisoning, but when police arrived on the scene, they had a very different opinion about that. She had multiple injuries that turned out to be from Huguely shaking her, causing her head to hit the wall repeatedly.
As it turned out, there had been multiple cases of domestic violence, often witnessed by other students, and Love had broken up with Huguely after one such assault. After she broke up with him, he sent her multiple threatening emails and text messages.
Ultimately, Huguely was sentenced to 23 years in prison in 2013. Despite a later appeal, the sentence stands, and he remains in prison. Love’s story is a sobering reminder of how important it is to leave violent relationships and report them to authorities.
TOXIC will premiere on Tuesday, September 15 at 10:00 p.m. ET. Episodes will air on ID weekly, and will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
