Let's go on a summer slaycation with Shudder's Summer Camp collection

With summer official as of June 21, there is no better time to take a vacation. But we horror lovers know that a summer camp can be a very dangerous place to be during the warmer months…and Shudder is here to remind us of that fact.
Let’s take a dive into the bone-chilling waters of Shudder’s Summer Camp collection, shall we? There are 16 titles in this collection, so you have plenty to keep you occupied during the upcoming heat wave a lot of us are experiencing.
The Alchemist Cookbook – This film features only two characters and two animals (a cat and a possum). Sean is a man who has removed himself from society in order to practice alchemy. Isolation has made him a bit mentally unstable, which of course leads to some pretty scary black magic in the woods.
The Burning – One of the best summer camp horror films out there, The Burning introduces us to a camp caretaker named Cropsy, who is horribly burned when some campers play an ill-advised prank. Five years later, he is released from the hospital and visits a different camp for revenge.
Don’t Go in the Woods – This 1981 slasher is about four campers traipsing around a wooded mountainside. Though they don’t know it, a mad man is also in the area, brutally killing the campers he encounters.
In a Violent Nature – One of the most recent films to divide the horror community, In a Violent Nature is about Johnny, a killer who is accidently resurrected by a group of friends who are – you guessed it – camping in the woods.
Killing Ground – “A couple’s romantic camping trip becomes a desperate fight for survival in this ultra-raw, unhinged, edge-of-seat thriller.”
Lake of Death – A year ago, Lilian lost her troubled twin brother. When she goes back to her lake home in the forest, she brings some friends with her, and they soon begin to notice strange things happening.
Madman – Madman Marz was said to have killed his wife and children with an axe several years ago. Though locals tried to hang him, he managed to escape, and as head camp counselor Max tells the campers and counselors, saying his name out loud causes him to return.
The Marshes – “A group of microbiologists head into the wilderness and enter the domain of a mysterious local determined to kill anyone who steps foot on his land.”
Marshmallow – In this sci-fi/horror film, 12-year-old Morgan is sent to a summer camp after a traumatic event involving his grandfather. After the obligatory “scary stories told around the campfire”, Morgan begins to see a mysterious figure in the woods.
The Outwaters – Described as “surrealistic”, The Outwaters is a found footage film presented to us via memory cards that once belonged to a group of friends. The friends went into the Mojave Desert to film a music video, and encountered some pretty scary phenomena.
Piranha – This iconic summer horror film was released in 1978, and deals with vicious piranhas that have been genetically altered and released in Lost River Lake. While an encounter with a piranha is never a great experience, these particular fish are a different level of vicious.
Shudder proves punk isn't dead with The Ranger
The Ranger – Chloe Levine stars as Chelsea, who is on the run with her friends after running into some trouble with the local police. They decide to hide out in her late uncle’s cabin in the deep forest, and end up encountering a completely off the chain crazy park ranger.
Ruin Me – “Alexandra reluctantly tags along for Slasher Sleepout, an extreme event that is part camping trip, part haunted house, and part escape room. But when the fun turns deadly, Alex has to play the game if she wants to make it out alive.”
Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers – The sequel to Sleepaway Camp goes heavy into self-aware comedy territory, while still sticking with the low budget aesthetic. Pamela Springsteen takes on the role of Angela (Felissa Rose chose not to sign on for this one).
Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland – Springsteen returns to the role of the unhinged Angela, who once again makes the decision to visit a summer camp and cause bloody chaos.
Vulcanizadora – “Two friends take a trip through a Michigan forest, intent on carrying out a disturbing pact. When their plan fails, one confronts unsettling repercussions at home.”
