Predator: Badlands, the highest-grossing film in the Predator franchise, is set to hit digital platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home, on January 6. Physical media collectors are also in luck. The movie will see a 4k, Blu-ray, and DVD release on February 17.
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, the film earned $184 million worldwide, surpassing the franchise's previous record holder, 2004's Alien vs. Predator, which grossed $177.4 million. Generally, the film received a strong audience and critical response. The movie currently has a 86 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Its audience score is slightly higher, sitting at 92 percent.
Though set in the broader Predator universe, Predator: Badlands expands the lore by introducing new characters, including Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Kolomatangi) and Thia (Elle Fanning). Occurring in the future on a deadly remote planet, the narrative follows Dek, a young predator outcast from his clan, who forges an unlikely alliance with Thia. They then embark on a treacherous journey in search of the ultimate adversary.
The physical release will include a number of bonus features, behind-the-scenes tidbits, and audio commentaries. Some of the special features include:
Embodying the Predator – Meet the talented team of designers, performers, and effects artists responsible for bringing one of cinema’s most terrifying creatures to life on screen in ways we’ve never seen before.
Authentic Synthetics – Get up close and personal with synths Thia and Tessa as star Elle Fanning walks us through the process of crafting two characters who may look the same but have evolved in surprisingly unique ways.
Building the Badlands – Uncover how a team of artisans built this threatening landscape, transforming real locations into the dangerous environments seen on screen.
Dek of the Yautja – Director Dan Trachtenberg gives audiences an extended peek at Predator culture. Follow the evolution as filmmakers reveal the process behind developing the Yautja’s home world, spacecraft, and family dynamics.
Audio Commentary: Watch the film with audio commentary by Director Dan Trachtenberg, Producer Ben Rosenblatt, Director of Photography Jeff Cutter and Stunt Coordinator Jacob Tomuri.
Trachtenberg also directed Prey from 2022, a popular film within the broader Predator universe starring Amber Midthunder as Naru, a Comanche Nation warrior who protects her tribe against a predator. Based on the success of that film and Predator: Badlands, it's likely that the franchise will continue. There have been rumblings about Trachtenberg directing a sequel to Prey, though nothing official has been announced yet.
