The Texas Chainsaw Massacre returns to theaters on August 18 for Texas Chainsaw Day

Tobe Hooper's 1974 film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a classic within the genre. It introduced the world to Leatherface and his demented family and created a strong final girl in Sally (Marilyn Burns).

Now, fans will have the chance to see the movie on the big screen once again on August 18 for Texas Chainsaw Day, an event created by Dark Sky Films and Fathom Entertainment that coincides with the day that the film's events occur. The screenings feature a remastered 4K version of the film.

"Last year's response exceeded our expectations and proved that audiences still want to experience The Texas Chainsaw Massacre the way it was mean to be seen - together, on the big screen," Justin DiPietro, Executive Vice President of MPI and Dark Sky Films said in a press statement. "We're thrilled to make Texas Chainsaw Day an annual event and continue celebrating a film whose impact on horror and popular culture remains unmatched."

Ray Nutt, Chief Executive Officer at Fathom Entertainment added, "Texas Chainsaw Day captures everything that makes moviegoing special: passionate fans, a beloved film and the shared excitement of experiencing it together in a theatre." Nutt continued, "Fathom is pleased to partner with Dark Sky Films and establish an annual tradition and welcome the Chainsaw faithful back to cinemas for another unforgettable celebration of one of horror's most influential films."

Meanwhile, it's been a busy time for the franchise. A24 recently acquired the rights to the property. They're planning a new movie, directed by Curry Barker, and a potential TV series. Additionally, Dark Sky Films and Exurbia Films recently announced that a hand-animated, rotoscoped reimagining of the initial movie is underway. Audiences will have the opportunity to get their first look at the hand-animated version during Texas Chainsaw Day.

Hooper's initial movie was shot on a shoestring budget and follows a group of young people in route to visit one of their grandfather's graves. They get sidetracked and end up in a small Texas town, where they eventually encounter Leatherface and his family. The movie's opening has a grainy feel of a documentary, with a voiceover that makes it seem like the events actually happened. Hooper would return to direct Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, released in 1986. The movie is much different in tone than its predecessor and far campier. Meanwhile, there would be several more sequels and a remake in 2003, directed by Marcus Nispel. The last iteration was 2022's Texas Chainsaw Massacre for Netflix.
