Trailer for Onslaught is a hit at Comic Con, and Adam Wingard confirms it's set in the same universe as The Guest
Comic-Con attendees were treated to a lot of celebrity appearances, panel discussions, and trailers for upcoming films. One of these trailers was for the upcoming Adam Wingard film Onslaught, and it got a pretty good reaction from the audience.
Adam Wingard is very well established in the horror field, having directed You’re Next, The Guest, Blair Witch, Death Note, and Godzilla vs. Kong. I have to admit, I absolutely loved the first three (I haven’t seen Death Note or Godzilla vs. Kong).
You’re Next was an absolute blast, a tense, often funny, often gory home invasion/slasher about a bickering family trapped in a lavish home surrounded by masked killers. Unfortunately for the killers, younger son Crispian’s girlfriend Erin has mad survival skills taught to her by her father.
While the masked intruders manage to kill people right away, they end up fearing for their own lives when Erin starts fighting back.
Filmed on a reported budget of $1 million, You’re Next ended up grossing $26 million, making it a big hit. If you haven’t seen it yet, DO IT!
The Guest was also very good, and starred Dan Stevens (Abigail, The Terror: Devil in Silver) and Maika Monroe (It Follows, Longlegs). In it, a family grieving the loss of their soldier son Caleb is visited by a man who claims to have been Caleb’s best friend while they were fighting in the war.
David seems great at first, he is polite and helpful…but soon, his overprotectiveness of the family starts to get too intense, and the violence kicks in hard.
Blair Witch was a direct sequel to The Blair Witch Project, about Heather’s younger brother, who firmly believes his sister is still alive based on a YouTube video he saw. He convinces some friends to go check out those fabled woods, and it doesn’t end well. While Blair Witch did not get a lot of love, I thought it was solid, with plenty of action and scares.
What can we tell from the trailer for Onslaught?
The trailer for Onslaught looks like it also features a lot of bloody action sequences. We see a young mom who was also a soldier, spending some time in her desert trailer with her little girl. Then a group of super-soldiers invade the area, and she and other residents of the trailer park have to fight them off. Judging by the trailer, not all of said residents make it out of the fight alive.
There are plenty of action sequences, all of which look pretty good, and some of which feature the woman being a total badass.
It was recently confirmed that Onslaught is a “spiritual sequel” to The Guest, and Wingard said: “It’s not like a direct sequel, in the sense that it’s a continuation of those characters, but it takes place in the same town as The Guest. The idea is that the secret programs we’re seeing going on here are other little aspects of the same thing David’s character came from in The Guest.”
Dan Stevens, who appeared as David in The Guest also appears in Onslaught, along with Adria Arjona as Celeste, our kick-ass female lead.
