HBO Max continues to be an impressive streaming service, at least when it comes to the horror genre. For instance, they have quite an impressive list of A24 horror movies available, but also more recent blockbusters like Weapons and Sinners. The streamer just added a few more impressive titles to its August roster, and here's what we recommend.
HBO Max adds to its A24 horror selections
As already mentioned, HBO Max has a ton of A24 movies available. They're adding two more in August. The first, which is already available, is It Comes at Night. The 2017 film focuses on a family hiding in the forest during a pandemic. When another family seeks refuge, this causes an uneasy alliance to form, along with increased paranoia, chilling night-time disruptions, and a breach in quarantine.
Additionally, on August 21, HBO Max is adding the horror-adjacent, musical drama Mother Mary. Starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, the movie follows an iconic pop star (Hathaway), as she prepares for a major comeback following a traumatic onstage accident. Overwhelmed, she heads to the English countryside to reunite with her former creative partner and costume designer (Coel). This unearths old resentments, psychological hauntings, and a toxic past.
HBO Max's August selections include plenty of slashers
For those looking for a movie that's bloody and gory, well, you're in luck this month. HBO Max's August additions include plenty of slashers. On August 30, The Strangers: Chapter 1 will arrive, along with The Strangers: Prey at Night. The movies, featuring three masked murderers, are always a fun watch.
Additionally, the underrated Orphan is already available. The film contains an unforgettable performance by Isabelle Fuhrman as Esther, who's adopted by Kate and John Coleman. The less you know about the film, the better. It has one heck of a twist.
Barbarian is an absolute must-see, and it's now on HBO Max
Finally, there's one more movie that's an absolute must-watch, and it's already on HBO Max. That movie is Barbarian, starring Georgina Campbell as Tess, a young woman who travels to Detroit for a job interview and arrives late at her rented Airbnb. She then discovers the house is accidently double-booked by an overly friendly stranger named Keith (Bill Skarsgard). The two then discover that there's something rather horrifying lurking underneath the house.
Before he wrote and directed Weapons, Zach Cregger created Barbarian. It's the movie that really put the director on the map, and it includes quite a creepy atmosphere and great performances by Skarsgard and Campbell. It also has quite a narrative shift by the halfway point, but like Orphan, the less you know going into the movie, the better.
Before spooky season kicks into full gear, there's still August and a bit of summer left to enjoy. Cool down with HBO Max's horror offerings. Happy streaming!
