HBO Max has increasingly been adding stellar horror movies. September is no different. The streamer has quite a line-up this month, including one of the biggest horror movies of 2026 so far. Here are some highlights and five must-see movies.
Backrooms
The biggest highlight of HBO Max's September horror line-up is Backrooms (read our review), one of the buzziest genre movies of the year so far. Directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons, the movie stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Clark, a furniture store owner who discovers a portal to endless liminal spaces. Clark becomes obsessed, and eventually, draws his therapist, Dr. Mary Kline (Renate Reinsve), and his employees into the bizarre and unsettling labyrinth where horrors await. Backrooms has some really stellar set designs and solid performances by Ejiofor and Reinsve.
Backrooms will stream on HBO Max beginning September 25.
Talk to Me
Besides Backrooms, there's another solid A24 horror movie coming to the streamer this month, 2022's Talk to Me. The movie stars Sophie Wilde as Mia, a teen grieving the loss of her mother. She and her friends attend a party where their peers use an embalmed and severed hand to conjure spirits. The game has strict rules, and after Mia tries it for the first time, she feels an intense rush and becomes addicted, while hoping to use the hand to talk to her mother. Directors Danny and Michael Philippou are currently working on a sequel.

The Craft
The Craft is a great gateway horror movie, especially for teens, and it's also a really fun 90s movie. The film follows four high school students, Fairuza Balk's Nancy, Robin Tunney's Sarah, Neve Campbell's Bonnie, and Rachel True's Rochelle. Together, the four outcasts form an intense bond over witchcraft, which also empowers them against their bullies. However, Nancy becomes obsessed and consumed with the power, and it pits her against the group, especially Sarah.
The Craft is now streaming.
Carrie
Released in 1976 and directed by Brian De Palma, Carrie is an adaptation of Stephen King's novel that stars Sissy Spacek as Carrie White, who's frequently tormented and bullied at school by her peers. She also has a terribly strict and uber-religious mother, played by Piper Laurie. When the popular kids hatch a plan to humiliate Carrie at prom, she gets her revenge using her telekentic powers.
Carrie is now streaming.
Pearl
For those seeking to have a horror movie marathon, I suggest watching Pearl with Carrie and perhaps The Craft. All of these horror movies feature powerful female protagonists who eventually get revenge. Set in rural Texas during World War I, the movie stars Mia Goth as Pearl, who wants so desperately to be a Hollywood star but may never get off the farm. Pearl is the second movie in Ti West's X trilogy, but it's actually set before X, the first movie in the trilogy. Additionally, HBO Max just added Maxxxine, the final movie in the trilogy, which also stars Goth.

Other HBO Max September horror highlights
Besides the movies listed above, HBO Max has added several other horror movies this month, including Beetlejuice, Blumhouse's Truth or Dare, Gremlins, Gremlins 2: The New Match, Interview with the Vampire, Final Destination, Final Destination 2, Men (2022), The Meg, Zombieland, and Zombieland 2: Double Tap.
