Fall movie preview: 9 horror films to check out this spooky season

Now that it's officially September, spooky season is upon us. For horror fans, that means we have several new movies to look forward to between now and October 31. Between the first weekend of September and throughout the entire month of October, there's a major new horror movie releasing in theaters or on streaming almost every weekend.
Here are nine movies to keep on your radar.
Onslaught
Horror fans know Adam Wingard best for the wildly fun slasher/home invasion movie You're Next. Well, he's teaming up again with writer Simon Barrett for Onslaught. The movie has one heck of a cast, too, including Adria Arjona, Dan Stevens, Eric Wareheim, Reginald VelJohnson, and Rebecca Hall.
The movie follows an army sniper who struggles to protect her young daugther from genetically engineered super soldiers at a top secret military facility. Based on the trailer, Onslaught looks like a high-action movie with horror elements.
Onslaught releases in theaters on September 4 via A24.
Ever After
Ever After is another twisted and dark fairytale movie, and yes, we've had a lot of those lately. However, what makes this movie different is the cast, which is composed of horror icons, including Bonnie Aarons (The Nun), Jason Voorhees and Hatchet actor Kane Hodder, Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes), Malcolm McDowell, and Mark Sheppard (Supernatural).
What's also fun is that these horror legends play killers who think they're fairytale characters, and they unleash murder and mayhem upon a group of young women who head to a secluded forest lodge for a bachelorette party. Slasher fans especially should really get a kick out of this one.
Ever After releases in theaters on September 4.
Hope
Hope is a gnarly looking South Korean creature feature from Na Hong-jin, director of the stellar horror movie The Wailing. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival back in May, and it features an impressive cast, including Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Hoyeon, Taylor Russell, Cameron Britton, Alicia Vikander, and Michael Fassbender. The movie follows a village's police chief and a rookie deputy. They must defend their community from the creature after wildfires destroy all forms of communication. Additionally, a local hunting party suddenly finds itself hunted deep in the mountains.
Hope releases in theaters on September 9.
Resident Evil
One of the most anticipated horror movies is Resident Evil because it's writer/director Zach Cregger's follow-up to last year's Weapons. Cregger has gone on record several times and stated this movie won't be a direct adaptation of any of the games. Instead, he wants to capture the feeling of playing the games. The movie stars Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier who witnesses the outbreak occur in Racoon City on a winter night. He somehow has to survive. Though the movie isn't a direct adaptation, it does run parallel to the timeline of Resident Evil 2. Fans of the long-running video game series will likely recognize some of the monsters in the movie trailer.
Resident Evil releases in theaters on September 18.
Victorian Psycho
At this point, after her starring roles in It Follows and Longlegs, Maika Monroe has certainly established herself as a contemporary scream queen. Her latest movie is Victorian Psycho, and as the name implies, the movie occurs during the 19th Century. Directed by Zachary Wigon, written by Virginia Feito, and based upon her novel of the same name, the movie follows an eccentric governess, Winifred Notty (Monroe), who arrives at a remote Gothic manor. However, as she gets comfortable in her new role, staff starts to disappear, while the owners wonder if something is wrong with the new governess.
Victorian Psycho opens in theaters on September 18.
Never After Dark
Never After Dark played a slew of the film festivals this year, and it won South by Southwest's Midnight Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize for Feature Film at the Overlook Film Festival. So, there's a lot of buzz behind this one. The movie stars Moeka Hoshi as Airi. A psychic, she travelw across the countryside to help spirits cross over to the other side. During her journey, she discovers dark secrets at an isolated former hotel. The film looks all kinds of creepy.
Never After Dark opens in theaters on September 25.
The Influencer Project
Directed by Mike Nybroe, and produced by Eduardo Sanchez and Gregg Hale, creators of The Blair Witch Project, The Influencer Project is also a found footage movie. It stars real-life influencer Chiara King as a fictionalized version of herself. She travels to Copenhagen, and with a documentary crew in tow, she addresses her fame but suddenly encounters a stalker. Influencer horror remains a hot topic, so it'll be interesting to see what this movie does, especially since it stars a real-life influencer.
The Influencer Project hits theaters on October 2.
Other Mommy
If you've watched any horror movie in theaters lately, or heck, even The Odyssey, then you've likely seen the trailer for Other Mommy. Based on a short story by Josh Malerman and directed by Rob Savage (Host, Dashcam), the movie stars Jessica Chastain as Ursula and Arabella Olivia Clark as her daughter Bela, who confronts an evil entity that emerges from her closet. She refers to the creature as "Other Mommy." It also looks like her actual mother, and the trailer is loaded with plenty of jump scares.
Other Mommy creeps into theaters on October 9.
Werwulf
Okay, okay, technically, horror maestro Robert Eggers' next movie, Werwulf, releases after autumn concludes. It's set for a theatrical release on Christmas Day. That said, anything Eggers releases deserves the hype and buzz. His latest is a 13th Century werewolf movie starring Willem Dafoe and Lily-Rose Depp, who both starred in his retelling of Nosferatu. The cast is rounded out by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Ineson, and Simon McBurney. The movie follows a farmer who transforms into a werewolf and attempts to hide his curse from the village. Judging from the trailer, the movie looks like an utter nightmare with beautiful and haunting cinematography.
