Shudder and horror filmmaker Tina Romero are wishing the late George A. Romero a “Very Scary Unbirthday” this week on February 4, which would have been the horror giant’s 86th birthday. Tina is Romero’s daughter, and she recently released her feature film debut with Queens of the Dead, which is currently streaming on both Shudder and AMC+.
To celebrate, Romero and Shudder have announced several events, including the release of the music soundtrack for Queens of the Dead. The soundtrack is by Blitz/Berlin, a musical trio that includes Martin Macphail, Tristan Tarr, and Dean Rode. Together, the trio have worked on genre favorites such as Nexus Dawn, Scare Tactics, The Void, and Silent Night, Deadly Night. The soundtrack includes not only the Queens of the Dead score, but also Jaquel Spivey’s cover of Kesha’s Blow. It will be available across digital music platforms on February 4.
Also on the 4th, FreshKillz.com will be dropping official Queens of the Dead merchandise, and part of the proceeds will go to the Venus Pellagatti Xtravaganza House, described as “a historical anchor that flies in the face of the anti-trans rhetoric and legislation sweeping the country and states, ‘We have always been here!’”
Venus was a trans woman who was featured in the iconic documentary Paris is Burning, which took an up close look at New York City’s ball culture scene. By the time Paris is Burning was released, Venus was dead, having been brutally murdered in December of 1988.Venus’s childhood home has become an historic landmark.
Starting at 7:00 p.m. ET on February 4, horror fans can tune into Shudder TV for a Romero Movie Block. The block will feature The Amusement Park, Queens of the Dead, and Day of the Dead. Though he is most known for 1968’s Night of the Living Dead (a legendary film if there ever was one), George A. Romero made at least 27 features, shorts, and television episodes in his lifetime.
As if all of this wasn’t already celebratory enough, Fangoria will be capping off the day by hosting a virtual birthday party on Instagram. That will begin at 9:45 p.m. ET, and it will feature a live conversation with Tina Romero. The press release promises that other “special guests from across the Romero Universe and Queens of the Dead cast” will be part of the virtual party.
